Amplification for JBL 4311B ?

Hi all,

I am writing from France, and i would wish some advice in order to choose what would be best to build my system:
I have just restored old JBL 4311B and they are now "top", and i would like to buy the right amplification for them: first, I am hesitating between Mc integrated amplifier like MA 6900, and separate preamp + amp.
My Budget would be around 4000$-4500$

What would be the good choice :scratch2:?

Thank you for your help

Francis,

In the US, for $4500 (perhaps $5000) you can probably get a used c220/MC252 combo, but I have a feeling that overseas the prices would be much higher.

If you can get an MA6900 for your price range, I would go for it. They keep their value very well and if you want to upgrade in a few years you'll be in good shape.

Thanks for your help Alberto. Ryan, at Audioclassics, told me two weeks ago that he would go for a C41 + mc 7200. As the 7200 hasn't autoformers, i was not very "hot" for this solution. Another possibility was to buy first a c2200 or a mc352, and the other item in a second time, with a favour for the c2200 first in Ryan's thoughts; but i am afraid that the "second time" would be very far....

Anyone other advice ? Thanks

Those JBL 4311B's are very efficeint speakers, I have a pair of L100's and drive them with a MAC 1700 receiver (45 watts).
I think anything more that 75 watts is a waste, if you plan to keep those speakers, and this is coming from a guy who has a MC500...
The difference is that the MC500 is driving LS360's and no one ever labeled those monsters as efficient; they love power!
I'd consider a MC275; just my .02

Francis.......I agree with sully, the MC275 would be plenty of power, and would sound so wonderful with those JBL's. Add a C42 preamp, and you will have remote control, an eight band EQ, plus the option of future upgrades to either piece. The MC275 and a C42 together can be had within your budget.

By the way, welcome to AudioKarma, and in particular, the McIntosh forum.

Thank you both
So .....two points for the tube amp :scratch2: do you mean 275 mkIV ?
Is it enough punchy to make sing and swing the 4311 ?
Otherwise , what is your mind about ss Mc 2205 or mc 7150 ?
I know... its many questions that goes in many different ways, but as i won't be able to listen these items; i do not wish to go the wrong way for such a lot of money...:music:

Your 4311B @ 91dB are reasonably sensitive but they area small speaker and will need lots of reserve power if you like to play your music at very loud levels.
6900 is a good choice, separates will be even better choice but will cost you more if you consider hi power units as recent as the 6900.

2205 is a good amp, I use a pair with my bi-amped JBL’s, but they are old and will need upgrades, I am getting ready to have mine serviced.

If you like tube sound do consider recent Mac SS amps, they do sound very much like tube amps without all the negatives that go with tubes.

My JBL S8R Olympus speakers are powered by a pair of MC501's with an C2200. They may not need much power but sure can handle a lot. They do seem to sound better with larger amps as I have tried more than a dozen amplifiers both tube and solid state with the higher powered Mac's sounding the best.

Thank you all :thmbsp:

Finally, i was talking today with Ryan at Audioclassics and the deal is on the road:music: It will be a MA 6900 for the first step, so i will not be out of budget; then next year a C 2200 ( or 2300) for the second step ( with the amplifier part of the 6900). The final upgrade would be probably Mc 352 or Mc 402 to replace the 6900.
I am very happy for my JBL...and for my ears:music:
Thanks again for your contribution, i will let you know my first toughts, when the Mc will be home.

I know about these, as well as use them in the garage. You will smoke the mids and highs in short order underpowering them. Although you can get a lot of sound with 5 watts, these will make SPL if you crank it up. I would not do this without at least 120 wpc amplification. I used to have a nice picture I took of the LE5 that was in mine when I bought them. Looks like somebody plugged the thing into a wall socket, nice small, but very high temp burn mark on the voice coil.
That is why the used drivers go for so much on ebay, etc, new coils are near 300. from JBL IIRC.

Congratulations Francis. I am glad you went that route. You might even find that the 6900 will keep you happy for a looong time. It's a beauty.

Keep us posted.

Merci jmajma, j'aime bien l'ambiance qui règne ici, le pragmatisme anglosaxon

complète bien la passion latine....!

Thank you also Alberto, i'll let feedback as soon as the MA 6900 will be

delivered. Unfortunately, it may take some time: the freight

broker in France seems to be a little bit "money friendly" :D

Another guy, on a french forum, who have bought a Mc352 last week at

Audioclassics has received an invoice 310 $ for "administrative fees" in

addition to custom fees ( which are normal)....to be continued..

jdandy: we will start "French Level 1" if you wish..:lmao:
