Amplifier or pre amp?

Hi I have a pioneer elite class D receiver SC 65 with 9 channels at 170 watts per channel. I do not intend to watch movies with this, I want speakers all over the house.

I want to hook up my collection of ADS speakers: I have four L780's, four L1250's, two L1230's, and a sub-woofer (Atlantic Technology) with 2 satellite speakers.

It will take 12 ports to get this all going. So will someone tell me about amplifiers and pre amps? My budget is $700-$800.

Pre-amps usually do two things: select a source (audio and/or video) to send to a power amp (internal or external) and display, and provide volume and tone controls. AV pre-amp sections also decode multichannel audio. The 'zone' concept is what you are referring to with speakers all over the house. Each room is a 'zone.' The SC65 does not have separate "power-in" connections so you will have difficulty trying to send different sources to different rooms with the internal amplifiers, except it does have zone 2 and zone 3 RCA outputs. Zone 2 also has a video output along with stereo audio, zone 3 is stereo audio. This is a complex unit with lots of setting options, study your users manual. If you don't have one you can download it from hifiengine.com. Free safe registration required. If you are wanting just stereo in each room a 'distribution amp' may be useful.
