Amplifier Problems With a Sansui QRX-9001

When I first got it, I took it to a tech. When I got it back, the pcb was epoxied to the black back plate that covers the tuning needle. They were slightly offset, dimming the brightness, but allowed for bleed through. I ended up preferring the brightness over the bleed through, so I carefully pried it loose. But of course the little plastic retainers were gone, so I ended up putting screws with bolts in place to hold it.

Way off subject but I feel relevant. A good friend has a daughter that has taken a real interest in my shop and the sound that provides background (and real fascination with records) while her dad and I converse. As her 17th birthday approached after the holidays I asked her father about donating a stereo to her. Long story short I put together a nice system with a Pioneer SX-550, Denon turntable and speakers and a couple of albums. When presented with the present she burst into tears and according to her dad plays it every day after school. He also commented that others in her social circle cannot believe she has an actual 'hifi'. When I was your age some fifty years ago now stereo gear was as important to us as cell phones are now . It is nice to see another member of the now generation take up the hobby sir. Yes please, how about sharing your system with the group, the QRX looks sharp.

Sure, my system is compromised of the Sansui QRX-9001, McIntosh MC2205 power amp, a McIntosh C29 preamp, a Dual 1229 tt, a Teac 3340S reel-to-reel, a Denon AVR-X4400H, and a Furman Elite-20 PFi power conditioner. The speakers are a different story.

the McIntosh equipment I acquired from a neighbour that wanted to upgrade his system. He sold them to me for cheap, because he knew I was very passionate about audio. I fully recapped both pieces, and it opened them up quite a bit.

The Dual I bought from eBay for pretty cheap because the plinth was missing pieces.

The reel-to-reel I bought at an audio shop in Dallas.

The speakers I designed and built myself. They are made out of MDF 4’x8’ 3/4” thick sheets. The cabs are made in two sections (bottom: woofer cab, top: mid and treble cab), so they’d be easier to move. And I veneered them with walnut hardwood veneer. The crossovers I designed for them are 2nd order Linkwitz–Riley circuits crossed over at 250Hz, 1.8kHz, and 5.6kHz. The drivers took a lot of research to find/choose. I chose them on brand and paired them in accordance with their frequency charts. The upper dome drivers are silk domes with neodymium magnet drivers, along with a special faceplate design to maximise their dispersion. The lower cone drivers are layered carbon fiber sandwich cones with massive ferrite drivers. Their frequency response is 17Hz to 22kHz and SPL is about 90dB at 1 watt 1 meter. I intend on installing fuses and PTC self resetting fuses, one set per section for protection. They each have a max output of about 4,000 watts, although I haven’t had a powerful enough amp to test that. I also added double binding posts. But their best quality is their soundscape, depth, center imaging, and throw. And they’re not quite finished yet either. There’s a few cosmetic things and some minor crossover adjustments to be made once I have a more suitable space for them. I’ve also built a few preceding pairs if you’d like to see. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer.

It’s my pride and joy! It’s taken a lot of time and effort to put together, and to get everything sounding and working like new. Not to mention luck in finding some of it. And thanks to your help my QRX-9001 is finally working great! And honestly probably my favourite piece I have!

Btw, if any of you were wondering why the knobs were off the 9001, I’m waiting for a BA312 I.C. to come in for the back tone card left channel. It failed not long ago causing that channel to have a loud white noise hiss. I left the knobs off since troubleshooting that card, figured I didn’t need to put them back on if I was just going to take them off again to replace the part once it comes in.

And I will definitely make sure to come back here if I ever need assistance in troubleshooting equipment again! It was a great help and learning experience, as well as a lot of fun!

Oh, and a couple pictures of the build process of my speakers:

(each section is filled with polystuff insulation aside from the sealed woofer cab, the back portion is fiberglass, and top layer is polystuff)

And a picture of the crossovers when I first built them, before making adjustments:

Only thing that bothers me occasionally with the Sansui QRX-9001 is the slight clipping every now and then when pushing heavy loads. I wish it had a power guard circuit, or a similar dynamic compressor, like McIntosh uses, or top of the line Sansui stereo amps.
