amusing misinformation in old offsite thread LoL

Another example of why you should take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Of course, everybody knows RS-4bs sound exactly like an Aiwa mini-system.

that vintage of infinity is one of the toughest speakers to drive, needing a ton of current into low impedance loads. I'm sure the guy's amp wasn't having any psu issues with the low frequency stuff LoL

those old 80s speakers can't compete with modern shelf systems right?

I'd offer to GIVE his dad a 5.1 computer system complete with the Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 Soundcard he likes, if I could haul away the tired old Infinity 46 speakers in exchange!

The blind leading the blind, or the clueless answering the clueless, is a common phenomenon online. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

Due to a plethora of somewhat good quality speakers, I find myself using my 4Bs on my main computer system. Using a NAD 1600 pre and 2600 amp (150 wpc.) And the bass is just fine for music and the sound effects in FPS games. The bass is great IMO on these speakers. People that like the plastic vinyl cover micro one notes do not understand anything but compressed to death sonic boominess. Of course that's just my opinion.

Do you think he has them phased incorrectly ???

Why does everything have to have, or be, a 'subwoofer' lately?
Subwoofers are for 20Hz and below, are they not ?

I don't think that a subwoofer is only 20 hz and below, maybe 60 hz and below for most people.

But yes, the term "subwoofer" is usually incorrectly used.

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

compare that "discussion' of low freq response in RS4b's to my recent thread asking for advice here on AK...this site is an oasis on the wasteland that is the net...for specific questions and support, or simply reading about issues, questions, advice and experiences of others. I can log onto this site any time of the day or night and find interesting and informative posts, articles, tutorials, as well as establish a dialogue with people all over the planet about audio, and a litany of other topics...becoming a subscriber for a paltry $25.00 is a foregone conclusion for me...:thmbsp:

Both posters seemed convinced that receivers should have a speaker INPUT (Whhaaa?) for a subwoofer, and that a speaker wire passes "through" a woofer.. They must do things differently in Alpha Centauri.

I think the biggest issue is that the dude's 50 wpc receiver is probably not up to the task of making good sound with the 4b's, and where you hear that deficiency the most is in the bass. The piddly little power supply is just not capable of taking control of those woofers and giving them the current they need to sound their best.

i am really surpised how daddy didn`t burn that little receiver all these years.

maybe he removed the jumpers and the woofers don`t work at all.

hahahaha.

Any suggestions for replacement woofers if one is too damaged to recone and originals can't be sourced?
Watch eBay. That 8” woofer was used in several different Infinity models from that era, so they come up for sale fairly regularly. Trying to fit a different brand of woofer will be a real crap shoot.

What he ^ said.
If you replace just one woofer with a non OEM driver the tone and balance may shift depending on several factors. For back ground music it might not matter, for more in depth listening it might be objectionable depending on your other components or desires for how your system should sound to you.
You can set up an alert (I think it's called save this search preceded by a small blue heart figure) to be notified when any are listed for sale. A quick look yesterday didn't show any currently listed but that could change tomorrow.

I suppose you could insert a non OEM woofer to get you by until an OEM woofer becomes available.
Maybe contact the Partsexpress folks and see what they would recommend.
The 4b is probably deserving of being kept original. In addition, by many accounts they like a good deal of power. They might play ok with a small receiver but they may need more oomph to really bloom.
