My account is very old because I posted a few questions a decade ago now, but I never did introduce myself. Since I want to really up my repair skills, and thus hopefully spend a bit more time here, I thought I should do it properly this time as is socially mandated.
I am a general purpose nerd (software developer, car guy, stuff buildery dude). I've always been interested in A/V and vintage technology, so naturally vintage audio is in my wheelhouse. I have some electrical ability, but as I've been trying to repair more old equipment I have also decided it's something I have to get serious about.
My biggest interest is tape, and I've fixed a few tape decks to pretty good results. I think that if you are into tape, either you need to have very deep pockets, or learn to fix it yourself. I've mainly fixed things on the electro-mechanical side.
My favourite of my vintage devices are my Pioneer SA-8100 and Akai GX-4000D. I used to volunteer at the Musee des Ondes Emile Berliner in Montreal, which is a fantastic audio museum. I am in the process of getting my HAM radio license. I once rigged up a system that let me watch a VHS from my basement while sitting in an airport in Germany, with full play/pause/FF/rewind controls. My fun car is a supercharged 1992 Miata, and I have a 48U server rack in my basement which does many interesting things. I own two IBM Selectric typewriters, and do ocassionally use them.
