And now....more flooding (again).

G'day all, all a result of post cyclonic and ongoing wet season monsoonal rainfall, it looks like this town of Ingham is in for significant river flooding (again).

Is this just a bad dream? http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ20725.html

I actually got started on rebuilding one of my Ham Radio masts destroyed in Cyclone Yasi this morning! I guess I'll have to put a hold on that for a while. Yes, Life is strange. Regards, Felix aka catman.

Need to put your Hamshack on a boat.
Felix if you ever QSL with KAOCSI thats my father..

G'day all, no flooding (so far) but the local weather situation needs to be monitored, and believe it or not, I did get that mast finished late evening with some 'modification', although a bit of general tidying up needs to be done. Regards, Felix aka catman.

Murphy is 'always' about!

G'day all, just an interesting aside to recent antenna and mast rebuilding, a little incident that proves that 'Murphy' is always about! After yesterday rebuilding the mast and a wire dipole antenna for 80 m (3.6 MHz) which is quite a large antenna involving a lot of work and general messing about around sloshy, wet ground, the antenna seemed to function ok but not as well as expected.

So this morning I got out some of my test gear and had a look at the antenna feedline. I found a strange result. As I use 'balanced' (two conductor) feedline, I found a very high capacitance to earth 'unbalance' measurement on the feedline which is definitely not right of 550 picofarads on one leg on the wire dipole, and only 190 picofarads on the other 'leg'.

After theorising why this should be so and considering some unlikely possibilities, I realised what the problem must be, a broken (open circuit) conductor on one leg of the feedline. I use a feedline with several joins in its overall length, and that was indeed the problem, but the really strange thing was that all joints were very carefully soldered and wrapped with good quality insulation tape after application of silicon sealant.

I have never had a wire break on that feedline previously, but today I did! See what I mean about 'Murphy'? At least that antenna is now working just fine. Regards, Felix (vk4fuq) aka catman.
