Android to PC Bluetooth connection weirdness

wasclywabbit

When the going gets wierd, the wierd turn pro.
Probably the most popular response to this question is "Why bother?" But here goes. It appears to be possible to stream music from my Android (Pixel 5) to my PC (Windows 10) via a Bluetooth connection. I have no difficulty pairing the two. Keeping them connected is another issue. Windows sees the Pixel and goes so far as to list it as an input device on the Recording tab. But it shows with the evil little red down arrow indicating it can connect. The problem appears to be on the Pixel end. As soon as it connects to the PC it immediately disconnects, but stays paired, showing the PC as a "previous connection." So close and yet so far away... Anybody else ever attempted this sort of thing? The motivation here is my DAC is connected to my PC that's not in my listening area.

Yeah, I know it's notoriously "lossy." But word has it there are newer codecs that are less so. I like the convenience of streaming with my phone. I've tried USB from my phone to my DAC. But that requires an OTG connection that maxes out at 10 feet.

The newer codecs require the newest hardware. If your hardware, both on your PC and your phone, do not support the latest codecs, then you are stuck using a worse, more lossy codec. The new Pixel 5 supports AptX HD and LDAC. Does your PC? It may be that your Pixel is trying to use a codec not supported by your PC.

Problem solved...mostly. Windows 10 required an app called Bluetooth Audio Receiver. Once installed, everything works, including the Audio Recording input. Connection says it's at 16bit 41kHz so it must be using a newer codec. Spec analysis shows little loss. But there's some minor stuttering, which is a common Bluetooth bug. Persistence pays off sometimes. Thanks for your replies!

Glad you figured it out. The Pixel 3 does AptX HD too, which I think supports ~48/24. I have some compatible earbuds but haven't tried hooking up with any of my Win10 laptops that have Bluetooth (I'm sure they don't have AptX anyway).
