'72 164 Volvo definitely a +1 in would rather have list. Auto with a/c. This is the original style without the crappy safety bumpers that killed the looks, dual carbs and much less plumbing under the hood though it still has more than enough to meet the US emissions back then.
My 2nd Volvo was a '71 with same layout but stick shift and for a tank could cruise all day long at 105mph. A total tank with a huge 6-cyl engine from their truck line with massive torque. When I first met my wife who had never driven after having her license for - well a number of years, she needed a car and I found a 164e on a Volvo dealer's lot that she bought. After that we bought 2 more 164es over the years as she only wanted these disguised trucks, interesting to see 3 in the drive. She was well under a hundred pounds and to see her behind the huge wheel wrestling the car or even seeing her closing the massively heavy doors closed made me laugh.
This was the largest Volvo made, a much stretched 144 with a combo of truck and 144 underpinnings and their then famed controlled crush zone that worked. Her father while visiting us one day sadly proved it with her 1st one but the guy who rear ended them was far worse off for the hit, his Caddy was new and eventually written off, The Volvo drove away but the rear doors were very hard to open. The frame shop said the frame had crushed but was still square and as it was after of the rear wheels did not affect handling. I used it for a couple of years that way as the office run about. But this lead to a bad outcome. From that day forward she has refused to willingly drive, own or be comfortable in any other brand of car. Only other car she felt somewhat comfortable driving was the old Jag XJ-6 dual tanker. From the time of the first Volvo, a Volvo has been in our drive and she does not like the fwd Volvos so we are stuck in time with a '95 940.
For a collector these are one of those interesting cars to have and a great car for a new driver of someone headed to college. Just change those timing gears as they are phenolic and if they let go it will wipe the engine. IPD used to sell replacement sets made from hardened aluminum to take care of the weakness.
