another Acoustic Research score

So work has been dead this week and while out running errands I decide to hit a few thrift stores. I go to the Salvation Army and as soon as I walk in I see the backs of some AR speakers (the control knobs have a distinct look to them). I get close and see they are AR-2ax's. Look at the price: $30. Not in as good of shape as my AR-5's, but still not too bad. I take them to the register and point out some stains and dings and they get marked down to $25.

From what I have researched the only difference between the AR-2ax's and AR-5's is the midrange speakers. Can't wait to see how these sound. Hopefully similar to the AR-5's.

The crazy thing is that the past three speakers I was hoping would turn up locally on Ebay have been at local thrift stores and all within a week of hoping to find them. It happened with my KLH model fives, the AR-5's and now the AR-2ax's. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.

I'd start hoping for some Klipschorns, and other cool things too if it would work for me that way. Nice score

quick questions

I got the grilles off. The AR-2ax's have cloth surrounds. There is a small foam ring around the dust cap. The dust cap goes inward and not out. The tweeter is connected from the front and the midrange from the back. The tweeter is the older style dome, bigger and dark orange.

Do the surrounds need to be doped? When did AR switch from cloth to foam surrounds?

midrange looks like this

tweeter looks like this
