Another AU-919

Hello all,
I have been following Hyperion's thread on his AU-919, gathering info and looking forward to the arrival of mine.

Well, it got here, and suffice to say the packaging wasn't quite up to the job despite specific requests :tears: .

The true state of affairs is evident here:

While I was prepared for a bit of work to deal with the Sansui glue, I wasn't expecting to have to start with panel-beating!

Inspection shows that it looks worse than it really is, apart from the corner of the front panel. All I can do there is neaten it up a bit.

Ah well - the journey begins (and I've still got my AU-517 to do. And did I mention that I also picked up an AU-719 last month! Serious business this Sansui addiction!).

regards

That is a shame Angus, luckily the front (and rear) do detach from the central 'box' so if you are prepared for a fair amount of disassembly you should be able to straighten it out.

I wish you good luck, please let me know if I can be of any assistance with your restore. :thmbsp:

That is not something what you cant fix... When I remember how I received my G22000 (OK just the power part), yours problem seems to me just piece of cake :)
It will be worse situation if you will find some broad cracked...
But I have to say... AU919 is very quality amplifier...

Good luck with your restoration. And hope the shipping damage isn't too difficult to repair.

I actually bought an AU-919 from someone that didn't pack a previous purchase all that well. See my Avatar. It's an AU-D11 that _was_ mint until it was shipped. When I realized that the eBay seller selling the AU-919 was the same guy, we agreed to the packing needed to insure its safe arrival. Up until just recently, it was the best job of packing I had seen. Go figure.

Hello All,
Well, I ve got the metal work straightened out, and circumvented a defunct balance pot, so now I've been able to give it a quick test audition.

I have to say even in its unrestored state it is a very clean, clear sounding amplifier so I'm looking forward to giving it a good refurbishment.

A question for John/Hyperion - in doing a quick survey of the innards while repairing the case work, I noted that the main driver board smoothing caps which are listed in the service manual as 470uF 63V as per most of the AU- x1x series are actually 220uF 63V. They are originals, since they are surrounded by the dreaded glue, and are Nichicons, but grey instead of the usual pale blue. What were the values on your AU-919 John?

Off to start the parts list compilation now.

regards

Angus

Mine were 470µF, 63v (this is C01,02,03,04 on the driver board correct ?) - also listed in service manual as 470µF, 63v - mine were black in colour.

AK member scottrt helpfully identified mine as an 'early' model - so maybe this makes the difference here :scratch2:

And I replaced them like for like - if yours are 220µF, 63v you should do the same.

EDIT: Just noticed this is my post number 4,919 :D

Hello John,
Thanks for the response. Yes, C01 - C04 on the driver board. I saw the post from scottrt, very helpful, and mine has the tin-can FETs as well so it's not an early/late thing (although it may well still be date-related).

Anyway, time to get some components delivered and the soldering iron warmed up!

regards

Angus

There are indeed different caps on the driver and EQ boards depending on vintage. Also, they have slightly different list of Black Flag caps between them. From my notes:
Driver C 01- 05: early = 63v 220uf, late = 63v 470uf
C19,20,45,46: early = 63v 10uf, late = 63v 3.3uf
C 7,8,13,14: early = 50v 1uf, late = 50v 4.7uf

for EQ board F-2835
C47 - 50: early = 50v 200uf, late = 50v 330uf
C 55 - 58: early = 35v 47uf, late = 35v 100uf

The cct boards are different too, as they either do or don't have the update with the Sony chip differential pair.

Scott,
Thank you for that goldmine of data .

I'll take a look at the other boards as well, and do a bit of an audit on what I've currently got installed.

regards

Angus

That is interesting, so it seems I have an early model EQ board - but with late model capacitor choices. And a late model driver board - more like the right hand pic above - also with capacitors as per late model.

Thanks again Scott.

And for Angus
I dug up a thread on AU-919 driver board re-cap here it is:
