Another B&O RX2 in the house

A very elegant machine, in great condition, with 10+ WAF. I have one that looks like crap, doesn't work, and never will work. Please give me a brief thought while you enjoy yours.
 
After new Neutrik ends on the cables plus some spit and polish it looks and works even better. I have to remember to be more careful on the B&O platters though. The coating on them is very sensitive to spray cleaners and so on.

It's the RX you see in this thread. The RX works better in that application as all the buttons are top facing unlike the Play button on the RX2.

Well, I do have 2 extra freshly rebuilt MMC cartridges. ;) That's 4 total with the ones on this and the other RX. :D
 
That is the problem with my cartridges, they need to be rebuilt because each has lost a channel. Before I sold my TX I used the MMC4 on it to check out both tables, which work fine, but it's difficult to buy a new/rebuilt cartridge for a table(s) which I prefer to move on to someone. The cost sort of sets the value, and without resorting to ebay, I'll wind up with another table or two rebuilt and no place to use it and potentially over-priced for the market here..

I have been watching for a working used stylus, and I know you had a problem with one you bought in the past. So, who did your rebuilding? and did you also need to have a channel fixed?

Those are nice tables. Mine is next to the reel in my avitar. I have a mmc 3 on it. Sure hope it lasts a long time.

I sent 3 cartridges to Axel in Germany but as he is retiring from at least that part of his business he passed them on to Franz-Josef Shulte at https://www.tonabnehmerservice.de/

Two came back repaired and the 3rd was declared dead. It actually had a bad channel when I sent it; the other 2 were re-tipped successfully. I don't think they even say they can fix the internal wiring. Good luck with that.
 
I did see a couple places will repair a channel out when retipping, one was in Denmark, the other here in the states. The stateside one said add on $20 if a channel is out.

I use a 1229 and a Micro Seiki and have debated selling the MS, which would pay for a cartridge but that will only happen if I decide to keep one of the B&Os. I do like the RX2, it really is one sharp looking table, and you're right, the WAF factor is tops. If I needed to put a table in the living room i would buy a refurbed cartridge!
 
So, remember I mentioned that the platter on the B&O tables is very sensitive to cleaners etc. ? They have a very thin clear coat or something on it that often gets marred, spotted or damaged by cleaning or other means. Well, I happened to have had an old RX2 platter, the only thing remaining from a parts table of some years ago. It had some significant damage to that top coating. I had nothing to lose with this one so i took some nail polish remover (acetone) to it.

It took about 10 minutes or so and a bit of rubbing with a finger and removal with paper tissue but came out pretty darn good! It barely if at all affected the black strips. Ok, so no before pics, but if I do this to the other one I will take some.

Now perhaps the aluminum will oxidise more quickly but I can let this one sit around and see what happens.

Good to see some B&O TT love on this forum! I have had my RX since buying it new in 1983. Still going strong!

The price wasn't bad. I think 90 Euros each for me. He initially said only 1 was reparable but he was able to resurrect 2. Turnaround was not too bad though I think it was extended a bit by the transition from Axel to him.
 
Welcome to the Beo-diction! :D I'm up to eight Beograms at this point, both radial (3000, 1800, RX, RX2) and tangential (4002, two 8000s, TX2). The 8000 is the one I use the most often, though it's in need of repair work at the moment, so I've swapped the TX2 in its place. I like their sound quality, as well as their extreme resistance to outside vibrations (gotta love that inverted pendulum suspension!).

As for the cartridge issue, been there, done that. My RX2 came with a MMC5 cartridge where the cantilever had snapped in half, but the needle part was still there. After seeing other MMC5s go for over a hundred on eBay (I paid $5 for the RX2), I sent my busted MMC5 to Anthony Garza at the sadly-defunct BeoMuse repair shop. He was able to splint the cantilever back together, and the RX2 was back in business, albeit with a bit of sibilance.

Since then, I've managed to acquire other Beograms which had carts, though a few of them have failed due to the suspensions drying out (including the aforementioned MMC5). For the MMCx series Beograms, I have a MMC4 pulled from a defunct TX, as well as a NOS MMC5 which was fine last I checked. For the older Beograms, I have a MMC20E, as well as a SoundSmith SMMC20EN. I'll probably send one or more of these carts to be retipped at some point, or buy another SoundSmith cart (can't recommend them enough).

How did you replace the RCA ends? Mine produce a hum every once in a while so I have to move the cables about and it goes away for awhile.....repeat...hopefully no soldering as I cannot solder due to peripheral neuropathy in my fingers/hands :(
 
Unfortunately soldering is how to do it. I've seen solderless RCA plugs but these wires are so fine it is not very likely that would work and still will require pretty good dexterity to attach.

Perhaps you can get someone local to help?
