Another DUAL 604 Question.... vs SL1300?

I'll try again... I have alot of questions since getting the 604....

What are your (anyone) opinions on the DUAL 604 (stock) versus a gen.1 Technics SL1300? Empire 1000SE/X 237DEM Cart./Stylus

The 1300 has a deadened plinth (full of modeling clay), new mk5 ICs, new KAB cartridge wires, and the superthick Technics rubber mat.

The 604 is all stock... runs like a champ, came with a M95ED.

Ive swapped out the Empire and put it on the DUAL, the SHURE is now on the SL1300 waiting for a new stylus (genuine SHURE N95ED on its way)

Here are my questions:
Which truly is a better deck?
What is the best alignment method for the DUAL?

I tried a Stevensen vinylengine printed protractor but it doesnt seem to be possible... So for the time being on the Dual I ended up doing the setup using the BAERWALD and it works, bass is great, clean, separation is very good. Ive noticed a bit of sibilance on some clean 45's though. I think there is a better alignment for the Dual, but just need that little bit of help there.

I bought my SL1300 for $200 several years ago when I got back into vinyl... This 604 cost $15.... If it isnt as good as the SL, it sure is a performer for the money!

I still have that alignment Question for anyone who knows.... and as far as why one is better than the other or vice versa, that kind of stuff is what really like to know.

The gauge method prescribed in Figure #14 of the owner's manual is very simple and very accurate. :music:

Whoops! I totally missed that Fig.14! Thanks for the heads up Balifly! Now to find a guage! maybe I can "eyeball it"... We'll see.

The distance from the front outer edge of the cartridge mount to the tip of the stylus is 9 mm.
An old brass caliper was used to eye ball the measurement.

That should give you a good starting point.:yes:

Thanks again! I used the vinylengine Baerwald arc protractor (the technics specific one....not sure if they have a different baerwald...) and also this happened to match the stevensen 2-point grid when i checked them both on the Dual.... I'll double check this with the 9mm spec and it'll be interesting to say the least if my setup turns out to be the same!

EDIT: 8.5-9.0mm ... pretty good i'd say!

The SL-1300 is a decent TT but plinth ringing is the weakest point. It also has a rather medium to high effective mass tonearm. IIRC, the Dual has a low mass tonearm so both TTs can serve a purpose to properly match different carts.

Good info... my 1300 has a deadened plinth. do you feel the empire1000 is better on the dual and the M95ED better on the 1300?
