Another Pilot thread tonight.

P-P EL34, I'm guessing 30-35 per channel. That seems to be about what other EL34 amps produce. The power supply is no small part of the attraction. That, and the bias supply is interesting. I don't believe I've run across a full wave rectified bias supply before. Its a good thing though, makes for a less noisy supply.
 
I've watched your vid and thread Anthony...nice looking amp.

I'd like to do that someday....build some Pilot clones. The original layout of the 232 is not the best....could be spread out a bit more. And the tube location in front like your's.

Yeah, I got a Pilot thing, I guess. 245A, 1060A, FA 680, 402, 1030.

Looked over a 260 that was in for repair at a local shop. Very cool.

Down the road hope to add a 232 and 210, but that's a ways off..

I've had a 260, it is a nice sounding amp as is.the 5U4's are much cheaper to keep, and can handle gobs of current,the 5AR4's have much lower voltage drop IIRC

Its on the bench now. Needs the typical cap stuff. I got it to full line voltage, and then I was watching the B+ drop off. One can was getting warm. The EL34's are nice and strong, one of the 5U4's was so-so but I had a match to the strong one in both strength and markings. I got rid of that messy input level control stuff too. Someone put new coupling caps and bias rectifier in here, but did a bit of a messy job of the bias supply. Overall I'm OK with what it is and what I got it for, but it needs work like any old amplifier.

Definitely agree that 5U4's are cheaper to keep. I've got a box of the things, and you can still get NOS ones for not much money. 5AR4's in any old production are quite spendy.
 
A 210 just ended on eBay, went from $300 to $455 in the last little bit. Funny thing, BIN didn't show up on the auction page, but I had a $389 BIN option in my watch list. This thread was the only reason I was watching it.

That 260 is much better cosmetically than mine was,it came with Amperex / Mullard outputs? good shape? A+
 
The only one that has legible text says Made In Gt. Britain. That one has a black base. The other 3 look to have the same bottle and plate structure, but have slightly baked brown bases. All test north of 100 on my Eico 667 and they seem to bias up OK. They look like other Mullard EL34 pics I've seen, so I'm thinking thats what they are. The only tube that wasn't great was a 5U4, and it was still well in the OK range. I swapped it with a stronger one so now both read at 100% vs 100% and 60%. I doubt it makes any real difference but I like matching tubes. They are the same design RCA tube now vs an RCA and a Pilot/GE.
 
look for the etching on the glass, it is not easy to see likely begins with a B they also have a hole in the center pin

It is a Pilot SP-210 but is oriented sideways.....

I don't see a case in the listing..and seems to be a console pull....so I have never seen this particular variation of the Pilot 210. The inputs are different I think from the stand alone 210 and the upright 210. So this is a 3rd variation of the 210?

I just thought this of interest to Pilot collectors.

I saw that one too. Obviously a console pull. No chassis, or case or dedicated power supply, as it has the umbilical to run power off of the power amp. I'm sure that face plate is exactly the same plate used on the stand alone 210 though.
From what I can see, the input plate "looks" the same as the input plate from the standalone unit, but it was probably mounted inside the donor console remotely, closer to the power amp. You can see in the photo that this one is not mounted to anything on the preamp itself.

For what its worth, item # 261728443783 on that site has one with the lettering right way round. Still looks to be a console pull, but cosmetically its more favorable to casing and using stand-alone. I wouldn't mind even a sideways model though if the price was right. Could even get fancy and have a new face made for it somewhere with the markings labeled correctly.


That particular seller has some neat stuff. He has a Bogen preamp I'd like, but not for that coin. I don't need it, but it would be a fine mate to that nice Bogen power amp I own.
 
I bought my SP-210 about two years ago. It didn't and still doesn't have a face plate. So I watch them on eBay with interest. That is the first time I've seen that style of faceplate, whether console or retail version.
 
There's a SA- 232 and SP-210 available to me and I just can't make it work on my budget. Crap.
