Well guys. Thought I'd share here my experience repairing and recapping a Sansui 4000 that was in dire need of attention. I bought this receiver several years ago (~$100) with the intention of rebuilding it. Actually, I bought two. One being specifically for parts. It came to me in fair condition. No left channel. Scratchy controls. Pops every once in a while in the right channel when on. But, otherwise got in FM stations just fine and played through Aux without issue. Obvious candidate for a recap and cleaning here. I wanted to learn how to do this work. I've been a PC tech and around electronics my entire life. This wasn't a stretch for me. So, once I did my research, bought all the tools I needed, built a dim bulb tester, I then purchased a high quality recap kit and dove in. I went slow, board by board, testing each step. Low and behold, after each test, the smoke stayed in. Fixed the left channel. Driver board was likely loose. Really needed a rebuild anyway. Deoxit on the controls fixed the scratchy. No more popping on the right channel! Also, threw some new LEDs at it too because why not. I then finally set the bias and offset. Much easier with new pots on the driver boards. This Sansui 4000 sounds fantastic now! 70s nostalgia overload. I can hardly believe it's the same receiver. It's going in my garage for my work bench / deck system. Can't wait to enjoy listing to the full, rich sound of this receiver as I sit on the deck drinking some beers tonight. I really enjoyed this project. I'm already looking for my next. I'll probably just start with rebuilding the doner 4000 unit too because no Sansui left behind, right? Cheers!
