Another VPI Scout Question

I previously lost one screw from my alignment jig. I could not find an exact replacement but the screw I found fits all the way into the threads. As we were putting the jig on, my son thought it wasn't sitting right. He thought it was supposed to be flush against the platter. I remember that it's just supposed to be secure. Then my son thought that we should put a record on the platter below the jig. I specifically remembered that it just goes right on the platter.

I had preciously lowered the tonearm assembly to get a better VTA. After I raised it, the jig seemed to seat properly. A new jig is $40. I could order one but that might be just wasting money. Does anyone remember how the jig seats? There are limited photos in the instruction manual. A good photo would help immensely.

I have the Scout 1.1 with the JMW memorial tonearm. I think that our first attempt to seat the jig was loose because I had lowered the tonearm assembly so much that the v-groove was not flush against the bearing shaft. That's the reason (I think) that cartridge alignment is first in the installation sequence.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I use mine directly on the platter. I have never aligned a cartridge over a record...but that's just me :music:

I also have my arm low and was able to get it to sit properly by lifting the arm up at the bearing and putting the jig in place and then put the arm back on the bearing.
 
Alignment jig goes directly on the platter with no record installed.

Set VTA with a record on the platter AFTER alignment has been done.
 
Yes, thanks everyone. You've all confirmed exactly what I thought. My son seems to think the jig was hiking up because it was somehow bent out of shape. That thing feels too solid to bend, unless humidity and temp changes warped it.

I'll try to seat it again and take a photo. Is it supposed to be flush with the platter when it's locked in? (I don't expect anyone to take off your tonearm to see exactly how it fits.)

If it doesn't look right, I'll order a new one. And I can always try tech support during the week.
 
Tedrick, you have an amazing turntable setup in your office. That's the one I read and dream about, late at night. That wonderful cartridge puts it way beyond my financial reach, at least for the present. I can't even fit the Classic in the space I have.

Near as I can tell, my JMW jig is made of aluminum, so should be impervious to humidity and normal room temperature changes.

Thanks. I'll let you in on a secret: the only component I paid full retail for was the KEFs. The rest of the system is built from used, demo, or sale items. That's the only way I could afford to put it together.
