Anticipating my KA-7100

Chances are good that the balance is hozed, and no amount of fiddling with it would make it right.

Many parts are still available for old Kenwood's. First things first...get the manual and see if the part can be found. If not, it might mean buying a parts unit. Depending on the style, you might be able to get a much cheaper amp of some sort and use the parts off of it.

Edit: I read your thread again...hopefully you kept the old 8300. Would sure come in handy now.

Oh yeah I have the old one and the balance works fine on it. I just hadn't took the balance out for several reasons (1) It's gonna be a bitch (2) I had hopes that a bud of mine would custom design me an output amp stage to replace the TA-100Ws that got fried on it. We had dreams of being the saviours of the Kenwood TA-100W world when we had a little board that would plug and play in all those KA-9100s that I can buy for $50 that met the same fate as my 8300.

I would still appreciate a rough estimate estimate of cap replacement for all but the big ones on my 8300. Wouldn't those caps be relatively similar in size and quantity as in the 7100?
 
Let me re-phrase that . I talking more of an order of magnitude. Are we talking $100 to $200 not including shipping?

First, I want to say that Army and Echo are two examples of the kinda people that are the core of this board. Thanks to the both of you. Thank you Army for making the purchase for me (before I had shipped you the $) and lugging it to the AKFest. And thank you Echo for putting all of your TLC into this unit, giving me plenty of options and being up front and honest about every aspect of the transaction. You are letting me pay in two installments, which is what made this thing affordable in the first place! :yes:

Yes, today when I got home, a HUGE box was sitting on my stoop. I lugged it up to my computer/audio room drooling all the way up the stairs. here is what I had:
 
I think the Earth used Echo's packing system as a blueprint: About 3" of foam insulation on the top and bottom, 1.5" per side. For all of you novice shippers, this thing was packed SOLID. The outer core is styro-popcorn and an inner core of tightly bubble-wrapped Kenwood electronics. The outer crust is (obviously) very thick U-Haul moving box.

After 10 minutes, I had my NEW KA-7100!!! It is warming up as the centerpiece of my bedroom system playing Richard & Linda Thompson's "I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonight."

Echo, thank you so much for the time and magic you put into this baby. If you couldn't tell, I am extremely happy. I think it is much better to own a few completely refurbished pieces than it is to own a basement full of parts units. This was definitely an investment I'll cherish for a long time.
