Any 2285 (not B) owners out there?

I found a 2285 at a yard sale for a song. After cleaning up with DeOxit and oiling the wood cab it sounds great with my Boston Acoustic A100's. I have not been able to find much information about the receiver other than it was only made for one year and the 2285b replaced it. I guess it is somewhat of a rare model. I was wondering if anyone has had the chance to compare the 2285 to the 2285b and if so what are the differences in sound quality and features.

I can't speak to the sound quality as I have never heard the '85, only the '85B,
but I sure like the build quality of the '85 over the '85B.
The non-B has pretty much everything on separate boards with shields over the RF sections, while the B model has the different sections consolidated on to a few boards and little shielding.
The specs are similar, with the 'B winning out in a few areas such as total harmonic distortion into eight Ohm loads and power into 4 Ohm loads.

I just finishing work on a 2285 ( recapping etc ) . Out of all that series and time period 2238/52/65/85/2330 , the 2285 is the best of the bunch .. used the same original power outputs as a 2325 , being A747A / C1116A .. Outstanding build quality like Catrafters say's .. Compared to a 2285B I will take the B ( mine was rebuild by Catrafter ) .. The B sounds a bit more modern and the 2285 has a more pronounced bottom end all things being equal .. 2285 is an excellent sounding model akin to a 2325 , perhaps the power outputs?? , I'm not sure

BTW , I had to restore my 2285 with a 2330 SM ... I'm still not sure about the idle current setting .. Have it set at 15.5 mv like a 2330 but its seems to run really cool that way .... Anybody know the idle current setting for a 2285 ?? ... Catrafter ? , Echowars ?? anybody ??... help plz..... lol

Cool!

I just cleaned up the little sister. A Marantz 2265. Very similar and well built. I think, the 2285 has just a few Watts more.
It's a very sweet looking receiver. For me, it has one of the best proportions of all Marantzes I have had so far.

Good sound, too!

I've had several of the 2265's, 2285's, and am currently using a very nice 2330.

I like this series of the Marantz receivers. They seem to be a very good updated version of the 2250B, 2275.

The 2330B has been a disappointment.......lot's of bad amp sections out there. The 2330 appears to be a more "stable" unit, in terms of the overall picture.

Most of the 2330's I've worked on, don't need lots of fixes.

I sold my Marantz 2270 two weeks ago and bought the 2285 yesterday. I am not sure whether there is anything wrong with my 2285 since it sounds more thin and airy, and less dynamic than my 2270. I kind of regret for selling my 2270.

I have a very nice and professionally serviced 2285B and recently acquired a 2285 about a month ago but I sent it out for service almost immediately. When I get it back I'll be in a better position to make a sound comparison. I do agree with catrafter that the build quality of the non B version is significantly superior.
These units came out during time of high economic inflation, and I believe there was pressure on Marantz and its competitors to either raise prices and retain build quality or stabilize the prices but reduce the build quality. Looks like most chose the latter.

Here are a couple of pics of my 2285 in my system. They are not great but I'm no photographer. I have done a few things to her since I picked her up at a yard sale. I have replaced all lights, parchment paper and cleaned and deoxited all controls. All functions work and she sounds sweet! I would like to recap her but am having a hard time finding a cap list (if anyone has one let me know). I am not looking for that elusive audio nirvana but just trying recapture some of my youth. I find myself drawn to the things I lusted after when I was young and wanting to listen to the music I loved back then. Call it mid-life crises! I run her right now with a pair of Boston Acoustic A-100's that I love. Oh I threw in a pic of my Buda holding my Grado SR125's, he is good AUDIOKARMA!
