Any experience with Phase Technology speakers?

I'm looking at a pair of Phase Technology PC-800HO speakers, in really good condition. But it's hard to find much info on them.

Does anyone have experience with them? How would they rate vs Polk Monitor 7's or 10's or EPI 200s?

Thanks for any observations.

The 800 HO are a pretty good speaker, I have a pair that are quite rough but sound good enough to keep. Very solid cabs and above average drivers give these a sound that is very special. The mid and woofer have the flat cones which is supposed to help with a flatter response, no pun intended. I found a review a while back that I cant find now where they stated that they had never heard such good midrange, the tweeter is not grating on the ears and they do a good job in the low end, very solid and not exagerated. If the price is right it should be a win, win situation for you. As far as compared to polk, I have never done a side by side but as my memory goes I would take the phase techs.

bluebook says,

PHASE TECHNOLOGY SPK, PC- 800 4 OHM (PAIR)
Description: ACOUSTIC SUSPENSION, 10" WOOFER, 5.25" MIDRANGE, 1" TWEETER
Manufacture Years: 1986 - 1990
MSRP: $990.00
USED: $156.00

That flat driver is actually a cone of styrofoam with a layer of damping foam on the front. That damping foam degrades and looks crappy if touched, and the arrangement makes refoaming difficult. The cones are actually fairly heavy, so rotating them occaisionally might make sense. I couldn't figure out how to keep the down facing subwoofer from sagging.
All of which is to say, if there is any sign of foam rot or sagging with the suspension, try to not pay much.

Thanks guys. The pair I'm looking at are pretty much mint, for $150. So, it seems pretty reasonable. I just had never heard of them, and didn't know what something comparable might be.

I had a pair of 730ESs that sounded great to my ears until I got some Infinity Overtures. The difference was night and day. But the Phase Techs were their bottom of the line towers and didn't use their flat panel drivers. The FL based company that makes them also claims to make the drivers for many other well-known brands. Always thought their print ads were kind of cheesy.

4 ohm a problem?

I guess these are 4 ohm. I have a variety of moderately powered H/K receivers and amps - 730, 670, 330c, 630, PM665, and the first solid state receiver, the SR900 - any problem driving a 4 ohm load? All of my other speakers are 8 ohm.

Of your choices I would be inclined to recommend the 730 as it is one of the all time classics. The 330 wont have enough power and I dislike the 600 series, my pm 660 would crumble under normal use with a 4 ohm load. I almost found the review though it looks to have been lopped off their site, but it was very favorable. Nat is right, if you look at that material on the drivers funny it will crumble and look like mine does. So that will be a project for me and my craft goddess wife.

I like phase techs. My home theater system is all phase tech. PC3 (front) PC33 (center), Octave 12 (Sub), PC60 with a PC50 sub for the rear. Also have a spare pair of PC600HO's laying around right now not being used. The 600's have wigged out some amps with the 4 ohm load.

Phase tech still supports the older models. If they have the cages in stock they will send you new drivers and you turn in your old drivers. If they do not, you can send the speaker in and they will totally rebuild it. I blew the surrounds in the 600's a couple months after getting them. Batted 50% on refoaming myself. So sent them both in and had them rebuild to new. Nice new foam on the front of the piston driver looks great.

dont know if anyone knows this but the owner of phase tech.worked for the macintosh speaker division before opening phase tech.he also invented and ownes the copywrite to the soft dome tweeter.

Thanks for the info, guys. I will be extra careful with the drivers. I'm pretty intrigued now, can't wait to get them.
