Any info on Bose Lifestyle 901 Powered Speaker System?

i don't believe it was Amar Bose's original intention to make a "party speaker" as has been stated here in this thread (he was an audiophile trying to bring home a concert hall experience) but...
by the mid to late 70's it was pretty evident that the 901 was valued as a party speaker too.
i first heard the Series I in a quad setup as indicated by Bose and driven by the TOTL Fisher quad receiver in a heavy sealed cinderblock and brick room with heavy shag carpet and minimal furniture and the listening experience was very exciting. Carlos Switched On Bach in Quad was a revelation.
later i heard the Series II driven by the Phase 700 and that was my favorite Bose setup.
i never bought them because i knew the building construction had much to do with the optimal listening environment and i never lived anywhere with that.
also, i always felt that low level listening lost something but loud listening made up for that.

Anyone know if the speakers are able to be separated from the stands?
Also, are you limited to using the Bose controller unit with these amp/stands and speakers, or can you use a different type of preamp with them?
