Any Mirage M3 owners?

Any other Mirage M3 owners out there?

Just picked up a pair of very clean Mirage M3 (not the SI version). I'm liking them so far.

I'm kinda curious though, they are supposed to have cloth dome tweeters, but I swear mine look like poly domes. All 4 match and they look like they are the originals, so I don't really know what the deal is. Maybe Mirage did a mid-run change on them?

Just curious what other owners have found. Maybe snap a picture of them with the grills covers off and compare.

I had both the M3si and prior to that the M7si. I really liked them a lot. I drove them with high powered SS amps. I guess I didn't even know that there was a non "si" version but it stands to reason there would be.

Ok,
I took off the covers and looked at the tweeters again this morning. I used a magnifying glass and a flashlight and now I can see that it is definetly a fabric dome. Its deceptive because the thread is so fine and the coating is very smooth. Now I can get back to listening :music:
 
They are very nice speakers (of course you know that!). Stereophile did a review of them and loved them (except the tweeter)...the si was born soon after.

I spent a good amount of time with the M-3's and the larger M-1's back in the day....the M-3 was my "fave".


They like to be "well away" from the wall and eat power....other than that...one of the best speakers Mirage has built IMHO.

I've read the sterophile review (in fact, I linked it above). Did not really see any criticism of the tweeters in the article.

This is what the writer says:

"I found that the top end of the M-3 belied the fact that it uses two soft-dome tweeters. Lately I've been listening to more and more systems incorporating metal domes, and have come to appreciate the best qualities of that type of design. But I have never been inclined to believe that there is only one "right" way to do something. Mirage's tweeter for the M-3 is about as good a soft-dome as I've heard—totally lacking in the grain or spit characteristic of run-of-the-mill soft-dome designs. Fine transient details are rendered naturally, without undue prominence. Strings are silky-sweet, yet gutsy when called for. Guitar had detail and warmth. Sibilants were clear yet controlled. "

The only real criticism noted in the article is a slightly emphasized mid bass. I honestly don't hear that with mine, but I should mention my M-3 have had the woofers replaced/upgraded to the newer Si version, so that may make a difference.

This explains what I saw on the site. My mistake. :sigh:
 
I think it was the larger M-1's they faulted... (I may have been wrong or confused?...sorry)....I may even be wrong about the M-1's?


When I listened to them I fell in love with them ($3,000 a pair new.. if I recall?)...I wanted a pair "BAD"......more than I could afford in those days though...sob, sob

Who knows with Stereophile. They could have praised the tweeters in in the orignal (M-3) review, then criticized them when they finally reviewed the newer M-3Si. I haven't read the review of the M-3Si (its not on their website) so I can't say for sure.

I would have never been able to afford them new either. Gotta love the used market :thmbsp:
