Hi Do you have any new year resolutiuons involving your obsession in reord collecting like.... I vow to only buy no more than 2 per week  My friends at work tell me I should try and cut down to 2 to 4 a month  I don't think so....But I have made a promise to myself to save up and buy 1 really collectable sought after album per month along with other good buys along the way :D of course. Like 1st pressings of Miles Davis...and early pink floyd singles.....and so on and so on you get the idea...What are your promises??

Catch ya later :music:

Daza.

I will continue to add to my jazz cd collection. J&R Music world is walking distance from my apartment and they always have a sale in the jazz department where top flight artists can be had for $6.99 to $7.99. I want more music that will sound good to me years down the road, not something I will play once or twice and then file away.

I guess Daza could not keep his promise to himself last year!

I'm not sure I'd call it a resolution, but I know the directions I want to head with my vinyl.

First off, I have a few boxes of LPs that need to be cleaned and sorted into the shelves.

Then, I still have some duplicates and multiples (can't avoid them with bulk-lot buys) that need to be A/B compared, and the lesser ones sold off/given away/donated.

I want to go through my entire collection over the next two years or so, and weed out all LPs that don't really please me, keeping the ones that I really enjoy and will definitely want to listen to again. If I don't LIKE an LP and won't actually play it and enjoy it at regular intervals, I won't want it taking up valuable space, even if I think it is "cool to have", etc... I want a high-quality collection of LPs that I enjoy, not thousands of LPs that will mostly just sit there.

I want to get the whole collection cataloged in a searchable computerized database. This within the same two-year timetable.

I need to get one more Expedit, mostly for Laserdiscs. Need to pare back on the volume of those, too, but I'll allow myself to keep at least eight Expedit "cubicles" of them.

Not vinyl, but I also want to get all my CDs burned in lossless format (FLAC) onto a hard disc, to serve as the source material for a music server project --again within that two-year timeline.

Why two years for most of this? Because I know that I'm unlikely to finish it within a year, given all the other things I want to get done.

1. Properly tag all of my digital files, mostly for the purpose of using my Squeezebox. I don't like it when scrolling through albums, I don't see the cover art.

2. Begin looking harder at 45rpm reissues.

In any event, music/lps was just a passing fancy for Daza. :sigh: Passion for music is one thing, passion for collecting another. Both take time to get your bearings. Daza was a little impatient to have it all at once, and maybe quit because he got burned out or frustrated.

This is a solid idea. Sometime ago, my collection was at about 300LPs, maybe more, I decided to take stock. I got rid of more than half and decided to only buy LPs which really excited me and promised to be replayed again and again.

Now I am at about 1000, but that's 1000 quality titles all in excellent condition. A collection to be proud of. I pass on good titles if they're not in excellent condition, and avoid buying things on impulse.

I try to hit the shops with certain albums or artists in mind, that helps.

I like this sentiment...

I just want to find some awesome vintage audio gear along the lines of Marantz and McIntosh. Also I want to explore tube amps this year. I am going to get off my ass and try estate sales, and get back into going to my old hole-in-the-wall thrift store places I used to frequent ages ago.

You are 100 percent correct there MRT2. I can say that I did learn some interesting things during Daza's brief, but entertaining, search for the 'perfect' issue.

Have a great new year!

Sadly, things get speeded up in the age we live in. LPs lie at that intersection between music loving, audiophilia, and collecting. In the past, a great collection was the result of years of experience, buying, listening, selling, trading, borrowing (not to mention tweaking your lp rig to optimize sound); not a couple of months hanging on an internet forum and buying off ebay.

What did you learn, olson jr?

And a happy new year to you as well.

That's what I resolved to do about 7 yrs ago and have stuck to it. I consider my music library as my musical retirement account. If I'm blessed to be able to retire someday I will not likely be able to afford to buy much music so I'm building a library that will not leave me wanting very much. At 2773 titles I still have many pieces that I'm after but I could live with what I have if I had to. For me there are no throw away titles. Everything I own, I like and will listen to. Cheers!

i miss daza!

He did start a lot of conversations here.

I'm still around mates..I like checking on my most successful thread ever with Latest Additions (LP) pretty cool thats still long after I stopped coming around all the time. I still love vinyl and I am after a few inparticular to make my collection a little more me. I want Beggars Banquet, and Bob Dylan self-titled. have a good year guys.

I think I would get frustrated at collecting vinyl if I were to have to pay the prices that I remember Daza saying he paid. Truthfully, I doubt if I would buy any more at all at those prices.
