Any Opinions On These JBL Speakers?

Hey all,

Not affiliated.

I just wanted opinions on these two speaker models, if anyone is so inclined. I would also appreciate any comments on whether these prices are high/low or ?

I realize the sellers don't make statements about sonic performance, so I'll assume any comments made will apply to working, good-sounding speakers. Obviously, these will have to be listened to before any determination can be made.

I am not familiar with any of the "newer" JBL offerings but generally speaking they are not very good. Of course their high end stuff is still very good, Everest among others. Most anything pre 1993 before Harmon bought JBL out is very good stuff. The set for $130 might be worth a listen, but you can find a lot of very good speakers for $400 if you are patient.

Mc_Man,

Hey--I really appreciate your insights! I was under the impression that all JBL were well-regarded. This makes me wish for a ranking, of the many, by the knowledgeable.

I think I'll give these speakers a pass, for now. Thanks again, Mc_Man.

Has anyone got a link to a speaker-ranking-by-brands/models thread? Preferably done in-house?

There are no broad statements that can define every JBL speaker for every application. You'll have to do your own research.

But, to get you started, the G-732 is a professional sound-reinforcement application not designed, or maybe even applicable, for home use:

I tacitly agree...and I am so diggin' that Allan Holdsworth avatar!! He and Jeff Beck work magic like no others with six strings...

I used a pair of huge JBL TR-125 (15" woofer, 1" compression horn tweeter) that were modern passive pro audio speakers - had it hooked up to a Samson Powered mixer and boy did they sing! Nothing particularly "bad" about them except that they could take tons and tons of power and you had to be careful about bumping the volume fader...

Even their newer hi-fi offerings on the lower tier are nothing to scoff at. Many of the newer models are quite respectable budget pieces. Just the same as any other popular speakers (Klipsch, Yamaha, Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio) that have floorstanding or otherwise models at sub-$400 prices. JBL had plenty of older low-fi stinkers just like any company.

JBL G-732's

I too am considering a pair of JBL G-732's. Used pair needing new drivers...are they worth $250 a pair???

Any comments welcome.

FWIW...I saw Allan Holdsworth about 15 years ago with Ronnie Montrose as the opening act at a small club in Detroit....WOW!

Second- or third-tier sound reinforcement gear.

$250 - $400 the pair, depending on condition.

I've never heard them.

Need subs, quite apparently....

JBLDOG says:

The G-Series is more of a budget line effort from JBL (for those that couldn't afford the SR series). I had, at one time, The G718 subs (loaded E155-4) and the G733 -- (I may have the model # wrong) it was a 3-way loaded with a 10" (don't know model), 2118H 8" and 2371/2416H horn/driver. They sounded okay for DJ work. Not wild about the cabinets. All materials were of low quality, the handles and corners were breaking all the time. I wouldn't offer more than $200 tops. If you don't like them, you can sell the parts.

That might depend on your concept of "older". Care to elaborate, or at least specify the "stinkers"? Seems like that's the kind of information the OP was looking for, rather than just innuendo. :)
