It depends on what you consider to be a "good price". There are a number of powered surround sound systems, sometimes referred to as Home Theater in a Box, that usually consist of a soundbar that doubles as a receiver and usually compact speakers & subwoofer. If you want something more substantial, Klipsch is offering some bundles that include some of their Reference Premiere speaker systems and an Onkyo or Pioneer A/V receiver. Below is a link.

You're probably limited to a more compact powered surround sound system then. Here are a few.

These might look more substantial but I doubt if they're any better than the options above.

If you buy a separate receiver, there are better ones than those cheap entry level Yamaha units. There are good A/V receivers for between $600 and $1,000 depending on power requirements. And good separate speakers and subwoofer packages will be more than $1300 alone. For example, here are the lowest priced speaker systems Klipsch offers and they're on sale. If you can stretch your budget a bit, I can definitely recommend Klipsch speakers for home theater. They've been doing it for a long time and in my opinion, offer the best bang for your bucks.

If you can get by with smaller speakers for a smaller space, this compact speaker system is a bargain right now. It would leave enough for a good receiver and still be close to your budget.

Yes, it should work fine. I did find a couple more 5.1 speaker package options in case you wanted floor standing main speakers. Both are good deals.

Buy a refurbished HT receiver from Accessories4Less. I like the Yamaha's.
Head over to parts express and buy:
2 B-652 Air (front mains)
2 B-452 Air (surrounds)
there is a matching CC speaker
Then go to Monoprice and buy their eight-inch powered sub and you're good to go.
The speakers have brackets for hanging them on a wall.
For well below $1K you have a system that will sound pretty good in a small to medium sized room. It's not high end but it can produce some very satisfying sound.
For even better sound on the cheap buy 2 Monoprice subs
