Any VFD members?

similost

Rockin and Rollin....
Something I have never seen discussed here. Wondering if there are any volunteers here. If so, how may years? Any officers?

Yeah my wife and I both belong to the local VFD. Just over a year now. We're still training, but we got our First Responder licenses at least.

Very cool. My wife is taking FF1 with me now. Been running calls for 6 months now...scary **** without the legal crap..... did a good meth class that taught me a lot.

Out in this area help is slim.

I cant wait to get my EVOC so I feel covered on a run.... been driving the rigs without the evoc.... I hate to hear a tone

I think I'm gonna find the ladders interesting.. Lots of years on constructions sites to unlearn what I knew better than doing... LOL..

I'm one of the few people in this area that's around all day and not working.. .Mostly me and the Chief.. Every now and then a couple are at work in the area and can leave work to make a call.

Like I said, we do what w gotta do around here... My first call was a brush fire, when it was actually more of a forest fire... about 12 acres burnt, and I was working with a local pipeline timber cutter dropping burning trees.. pretty surreal surroundings with trees burning above you and everything else black smoldering wasteland.

I'd done a lot of tree work over the years... I used to top trees for people...

I've done a lot of work clearing woods, and making trails and park areas. I've also done some controlled burns with people clearing out underbrush...

Other than that, just putting out grass fires we'd start by accident with fireworks when we were kids.. :para:

A few years ago the house and lot next to me was sold. The new owner wanted to build a new house on the lot, so he got in touch with the local VFD (Piney Flats VFD) and arranged for them to burn it as a training exorcise. They cut a trapdoor in the roof so the heat and smoke could be let out and then set that sucker on fire five or six times. The trainers would take crews in and search for "victims" and put the fire out. They would open the trapdoor and clear the smoke for a few minutes and do it all over again. In the end they just let it burn to the ground. It was very interesting to watch and it gave me a lot of confidence in their abilities.

I salute all the volunteers. Without them a lot of lives would be lost and a lot of property would be destroyed. Here's to you!:beerchug::thmbsp:

We've got a friend here, that's also in the FD with us, but he was one of the local paramedics too... He's actually one of the top rated guys in the state.. Thankfully he lives close to me, and he's only a radio call away.. .

He just retired from EMS though. He's still with the FD but he is so burnt on EMS work... He spent 8 years doing it... He said enough is enough.

I just took my wife up to the FD a bit ago and went over the SCBA with her... She is kind of claustrophobic, so she has been pretty anxious about having to use one..

I got her used to having he mask on, then got her used to what to do if something happens to the air supply. She was afraid of freaking out in front of the class... She did pretty good.. She only started to panic one time, when she didn't have the regulator snapped in correctly and got staved for air.. I showed her how she could give an extra shot of air from the regulator, or break the seal.

I took a meth class and was sick and tired of carrying that air pak around with me for two days.. I spent probably 5 hours breathing on it... and lots more hours carrying it.. I got a crash course in them...

In this area, when we get a call and can get to the station, get a truck, and get to the scene, it's usually more raking the coals and making sure there's no body... A couple of us live close to the station, but most don't... The roads are very hilly and very crooked, so we can't really drive anywhere fast..

We got called out for a tanker to assist on a fire a couple weeks ago. By the time the call came in, until we got on scene was almost an hour.. The fire was about 18 miles away. Most the roads with a tanker, you're not going much over 40... a lot of it 30mph..

My previous career in a New Jersey State Forest came with an appointment as a Forest Fire Warden at no salary. The forest is about 38,000 acres. We had a specialized brush truck assigned to the area. I've worked fires here in the Pine Barrens from foot stompers of less than an acre to over 18,000 acres. When the trucks couldn't handle it we fought them with back fires. We also sometimes used aircraft for direct attack. Occasionally got pretty exciting. I'm retired now, but still on the volunteer list if they need me. I have a great deal of respect for you folks who run into burning buildings with only what you can carry. That's a whole different beast. Stay safe.

My mother was a 911 dispatcher. No way would I want that job... I'd rather deal with the people in person than on the phone.

I was on Ft Myers Beach, FL. Not the big city but certainly had good and bad times. Worked a 36+ hour shift when Hurricane Andrew hit, and then there were all the spring breakers. Nothing like stupid people doing stupid things.

Wow.. that's pretty crazy stuff. It would be way too much for me...

I just noticed you're from my old neighborhood... I lived across from Mt. Vernon high school up until the middle of this past year.. Sure not missing the traffic around there...

Well, now I've done it. I missed tonight's ladder practice, because I have a nasty dose of flu. Who knows how far that'll set me back?

Hope it doesn't hurt you too bad. We can only miss 8 hours most. Any more than that and they won't pass us.

They've canceled 2 classes for us now because of the weather. I find that kind of ironic, since we'd have to run a call no matter what the weather.. .

Traffic is still bad, on a normal day. Add in some snow and ....

Well, my wife went and they gave her pagers for both of us, so apparently we're good to respond to calls now. No MAD calls for some reason, but otherwise we're good to go. I hope somebody with some experience shows up too, though.
