Any way to restore Empire 598 II rubber mat?

I inherited an Empire 598 II turtable and it is in amazing condition except the rubber mat seems faded and dry. Is there some way to recondition the rubber mat without leaving residue that might contaminate my records with gunk afterwards? The only aftermarket mat that i've seen that will fit this model is a cork mat on ebay, but i've read that the rubber mat is preferred on this turntable for vibration damping.

I've had some success soaking the rubber TT mats in an ammonia solution (mixed per bottle directions) for several hours after thoroughly cleaning it with soap and a scrub brush. Rinse and dry flat after soaking. Not perfect but there is some improvement and no residue.

Automotive Hydraulic Brake fluid is a natural lubricant and preservative for all things rubber - which is why the critical little rubber seals in your car's brake-lines are able to last (almost) forever!

It won't help restore perishing and the like, but a good soak for as long as you can afford will probably work wonders. Your rubber matt will LOVE it

Just beware that break fluid is fairly corrosive on most other materials, such as paintwork.
