Anybody playing War Of The Worlds today?

Blue Blaze Irregular #71
The Jeff Wayne musical version, that is.:music:

When I was a kid, this great radio station I listened to played it every Halloween. Completely blew my mind the first time I heard it.

It's become a tradition for me to play it this time of year. Anybody else?

I'll have the original on tonight. CFZM 740 in Toronto does it every year. 10 pm eastern tonight will see me parked in front of the 1934 Scott Allwave 15, listening to Orson Welles' classic. I just hope the reception is decent, though it adds to the effect of listening to it on an honest to goodness vintage radio if the signal fades in and out like its prone to do when you listen from some 350 miles away.

I will be later if I get back from the Halloween party in time.

My grandmother, when it was aired, literally remembers the whole family taking shelter in their basement during the broadcast.

I have a copy of the broadcast on an LP that I found at a yard sale or flea market or something. I just like listening on the air when I can, theres just something a bit more authentic about it I guess. Same reason I use old radios when I do it, and if at all possible, one that very well may have received it when it was originally aired.

Thanks for the Reminder! I have the Jeff Wayne version playing now. Wonder what the little trick or treaters will think? :scratch2:

Just out of high school, I remember hearing it many years ago on a cassette dub made for me by a friend, and I didn't get it. Fast forward probably 20-25 years, and the local classic rock station played it in its entirety on Halloween - I thought it was so cool! Found an original LP version with the artwork, then found a high quality MP3 to keep the LP scratch free. Love it - such good music I can listen to all year long. :music:

Mine lacks a cabinet sadly, but even just the naked chrome chassis is cool to look at. Its all around a neat set, and if you happen to be a bit of a radio nerd, its kind of impressive from a technological point of view too. The whole design of the thing is just so over-built. Instead of a simple rotary switch for a band selector, it uses a big mechanical rotating turret arrangement thats about 6" across and has a bunch of silver plated contacts to connect in the antenna and oscillator coils. The shield over the tuning condensor is chrome plated (the whole chassis is chromed actually) and lead lined. There was no such thing as over-engineering.

Ah, well, hope you get a housing for it someday, but yes, it looks to be built in an interesting way and the guts are cool enough to look at. Thanks for the info; I knew it had a unique design but didn't know specifically why.
