Anyone doing a garden?

I grow my tomatoes in large plant pots 20" wide at the top and 17" high. This time I decided to go deep. I took all but nine or ten inches of soil in the pots then transplanted the young tomato plants. Tomato plants have "hairs" along the stems that will grow roots when covered with soil. As the plants grow I cut off the lower branches and add more soil to the pots so they grow more roots. More roots more nutrient uptake. More nutrient uptake more plant growth. The first pic was on 5/31, the second one today.

@RickeyM ...I keep a piece of pipe cleaner on my carport and just wrap it around my finger and tickle while I walk down the row of peppers. Especially this past week since were in a heatwave and they're under the shadecloth most of the day. Not sure if the bees will go in behind it or not...but lots of peppers forming anyway.
 
The German Queen tomato plant was the first one to pop a tomato but sadly it secummed to BER :mad: There's another one formed so fingers crossed. The Sunny Boy Hybrid has a few flowers advanced enough to form fruits any day now. Yesterday I harvested several pounds of bush beans. The onions are all over the place. From scrawny plants to ones with thick stems and plenty of leaves. I've got eight surviving strawberry plants and one more struggling to regrow after something munched on it's leaves.
For the pollinators I've got one Borage that's blossomed and another with buds about ready to bloom. I've got a couple of Scarlett Bee Balms that will probably bloom next month along with a yellow coneflower and a Celosia. Something new I've learned. Wasps can land on water without sinking, take a drink and fly off again.

I've got a battery powered toothbrush I give my blossoms a little buzz with just to make sure they get pollinated. Because it's been so hot here this week I've been putting up shade cloth over the peppers and tomatoes during the heat of the day. This morning I watered early and had the shade cloth up by nine.
 
I went with 3. Determinate tomatoes, plus. The. Indeterminate ones I always grew. The determinate ones this year. Are putting. Out. A. Plethora of Tomatoes! Cherrys as. Well.
Temps have been Too. Hot so. The cucs have slowed. Down, but. The melons are doing well. The Det tomatoes. Are 5’ high

Well it happened again...getting real tired of this crap. The first two pics are the Lesya peppers and is what they should look like. The other two pics seem to be some other type of pepper even though they came from the same Lesya seed packet. None of my other peppers start out growing straight upward like the one plant. It reminds me of two years ago with the Paprika peppers turning out to be Thai hot peppers.

The Lesya's came in a packet of only ten seeds and are on the expensive side of seeds...compared to normally getting 30 seeds per packet. I was also super anal this year about labeling and not mixing up any of the plants. The seed company will hear about this. It always happens with the pepper I want the most too. :rant:

Also...just about all of the new peppers that were about 4" or so on the Spitfire Anaheim plants got blossom end rot. No BER on any of the others so far. Gave them an extra dose of CalMag via foliar feed.

The wife is this year, I gave up trying to grow a tomato. She planted Okra, Bitter Mellon, Lemon Grass, and a Sweet Potato. She eats the leaves from the Sweet Potato. Oh, I forgot, she also planted an Eggplant.

Peppergate strikes again. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the garden :rant: For the foreseeable future it seems the best thing to do is save seeds from known peppers to sow for the next growing season.

Yep I remember reading about that but my peppergate was 2022. I did save and plant seeds from my 2023 batch of Paquillo and Boldog peppers and they are growing fine so far. The only problem with saving seeds is if they have other different plants around them pollinating them the saved seeds may turn out a mixed type and not true to the original pepper. Has something to do with being hybrid or heirloom whether you can keep them true....dunno...gotta read up on that one more.

Come to think of it I do remember one of the Lesya plants even looked different when they sprouted with more rounded leaves than the others.

These Lesya peppers are the craziest plant I've ever seen. They all want to grow in the same space between the branches. Had a hell of a time taking a couple out as they are wedged in there tight. I want them to turn red but I read where they can actually split the branches apart so I took two of the biggest culprits out.

I've had nothing but trouble with store bought seeds for the last few years..this year my crookneck squash is zucchini, watermelons & peas didn't come up, and I'm not sure what my tomatoes are going to be

Seems like they really dont care either. If you complain to them at most they will refund your $3-4 for the pack of seeds. One company tried to blame me for not germinating them per their instructions and wanted a photo timeline as proof. What about making them liable for the time, lighting/electricity, soil, fertilizer and amendments you invest only to find useless plants growing instead. Nothing but crickets chirping when you ask them about that. And there's nothing you can do by the time you see its not what you ordered unless you have one hell of a long growing season...which I for one dont.

New business plan for next year...I'll save the seeds of every vegetable, fruit, grass, weeds and trees I come across this winter and throw them in a bucket. Springtime I'll take scoop 10 random seeds in a packet and sell them as various hybrid and heirloom plants. I'm sure something will grow for the customers right. :rolleyes:

I don't think they even care if anything comes up..I figure the stuff I bought probably sat on a semi trailer out in the sun somewhere for a few weeks..the seeds I save from year to year like beans & corn are doing great..so l know I'm doing it right
 
Mango tree #2, the fruit is starting to ripen. Second round of Surinam cherries. Didn't make any jam so far. The cacoa bean pod, I bought at the farmers market for the beans. Hopefully in a couple years I'll be able to make some chocolate.

I have one Purple People Eater cherry tomato so far, more blooms kicking in on the Frankestein/GMO cross between a purple snapdragon and a cherry tomato. I just read about shaking the tomato blooms in the Washington Post to insure pollination. Meanwhile the Panama Red is coming up gangbusters. (grin)
