Anyone doing a garden?

We have a Korean neighbor who makes a killer salsa, we skip the Habanero though, too much afterburn! I don't bother growing the onions,it's too easy to use store bought.
 
We have about 6 raised beds 4 x 10 ft. with some perennials (rhubarb, black raspberries, working on some asparagus) and we also plant tomatoes, peppers (various kinds), sweet taters, onions, peas, radishes, basil, etc. Also have 3 dwarf peach trees, 2 apples, strawberry patch, Concord and Niagara grape vines, and an herb patch.

And one hop vine.

I like to work the veggie garden all year, so I plant cold season greens (kale, turnip) in the fall and when it gets real cold I drop a cold frame over them and they sometimes last all winter. When it starts to warm up but still frosting, I move the cold frame and plant lettuce in it to get a head start.

Lots of compost at our place. Try to avoid fertilizer but we do use some.

Sounds like you are a serious gardener. I love working in the yard be it veggies or flowers or cutting the grass it's just nice to be outside where you can get instant gratification. I plan on spending most of this weekend in the yard. :D
 
.....ready to laugh?....monday, I'm going to start a tomato plant in each of two 5-gallon plastic buckets, and a third 5-gallon bucket will grow four stalks of sweet corn....(Thunderous Laughter)....hey, a sweet corn root system is fairly small, and I was advised to try at least 4 stalks spread out in the bucket....should I grow jalapeños in the third bucket?.....

.....I've also got a 4th bucket....should I plant flowers to attract bees for pollination of the bucket plants?....if so, what type of flowers?.....

Lessee, is it sun or shade? For sun you might try petunias or pansies. Shade, impatiens are nice. These are all dollar a four pack type of annuals.

.....thanks, Tox....they'll be getting direct sun up until about 1p....I guess petunias and pansies can go with that?.....
 
Thats what I Like..
I`m growing beefstek Tomatos. I have 6 that just sprouted.
I have strawberries that are giving me problems.
lots of herbs that are growing excellent.
I`m really digging growing this stuff.:thmbsp:
 
Still to early to plant , but deep fried some asparagus from the garden lastnight . Yum.....

My seedlings are well underway. I should be able to transfer some of them to the garden in a week or so. The basil is slowest from seed and will not go outside for probably another month.
 
Got a new muffler, air filter and belts for "Old Smokey" today. She's a fairly ancient Troy Bilt "Pony" tiller I inherited from my great uncle. It's as old as some of my receivers... now if it will stop snowing I can get out there and get the plot ready!

Yes this will be the 15th year I have grown it and one thing I have learned is it needs to be hot outside for it to take off. Planting it too soon outdoors just seems to stunt its growth. I hope to have 12 basil bushes. :D The oregano winters over nicely, we have a big 'ol patch of it. :thmbsp:
 
I have horrible problems with basil wilting and dying mid summer. It starts on one branch of the plant and the branches die one by one over a few days time. I'm sure it's some kind of wilt or fungus and not just dryness or the whole plant would wilt. I think I have a fusarium problem or sumpin like that. Rhubarb plants have been doing the same thing. Funny that I spent considerable effort over 15 years making compost and healthy soil rather than just bringing in topsoil stolen from some other place, and this is what I get in return. Drat.
 
My strawberries are in. Tomorrow: Romaine lettuce, collards, beans. Tomatoes and the herbs, shortly after that.

That is an odd one the only problem I have is keeping it from flowering which stops production.
