Anyone Heard of ADS B8 ?

Can grab a pair locally, but I can find virtually nothing about them. They are an 8", 2-way approx. 20" high x 12" wide. Any ideas about them?

I've had a pair of B7's for a few years. I really didn't audition them for very long.
A few weeks at most. They weren't bad at all as I recall. But I happened to like my L420 more.
If they're cheap enough, and you don't already own 20 other just as good pairs.
They would be worth a listen, IMHO.

Well, i figure that for $40 they are a cheap entry into the flavor of ADS speakers. It's my understanding that these pre-date the L-series but use the same driver/crossover complement of some of the smaller speakers of that series. Perhaps the L-5xx ?

I had a pair for a short time. Not ADS best effort and they are covered in cheap black vinyl. Unless you have a specific need for them I'd move on. I might have some photos on the ADS reference website but I can't remember for sure.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The B8 was one of the better 2-ways a/d/s/ made. IIRC they rolled in late '88 or early '89. Later they were replaced by the better looking L8e. Not many B's were sold and I recall seeing lots of cabinets getting the hammer. They need good stands and rock with a tube amp. B8's on a Dynaco ST70 (along w/ a ridiculously modified PB1500) were my mainstay for quite a few years. $40 is an absolute steal.

Thanks for the above insight, Soundmotor. Would the B7 be in the same league?

The more I think about this maybe I had B7's. I purchased them for another AK member and only used them for a couple of weeks. They didn't sound bad but didn't stand out to me either. I had purchased my S700's at about the same time and liked the S700's a lot more. Compared to the other ADS speakers I've owned (especially my pristine L810's with metal grills) the really cheap vinyl cabs were depressing.

B7's were great with a sub but definitely shy on the bottom end.

None of them however compare to the S700's you have.

These are in absolutely pristine condition. If I could pick them up for $30, would you recommend it just for their historic value?

Yes, that is pretty much a no brainer. That most haven't heard of them much less heard them, means little. They were introduced in response primarily to one dealer's request (Tweeter) for and entry-level product. They were too expensive however to compete down there and were discontinued ~1 year later despite being a good performer.
