Anyone here collects old computers?

The hard discks where broken. They didn't get warm. At one of them the engine was working, but the other one was DVD (Dead, Very Dead).
Sheesh, my 386 have (an "Digitall" 320SX) haves a slot for a comathematic procesor, but dosen't have one.
The guy that camed yesterday (here is already Sunday) wondered why the computer ain't stratin', but he forgot that the computer haves an old stile power source... untill I push the big button. It's instresting that with all the F.D.D. is an old one, for 720 k.B. it's reading 1.44 M.B. disckets (the F.D.D. read the floppy with the MS-DOS). Unleass I made on thing with it yeasterday: I took the mother board out and wash the metal frame benith it... man, it was so dirty there.

I'm typing this while using an original Apple cinema display 22" from late 1999. It cost $4,000 when it was new (no, I didn't buy it new). I used to have a 17" IBM from about 96-97, but I got rid of it in the move. It was very dim, even with a new back light.
 
I exchange my 386 computer for a "I.B.M." <<ThinkPad>> 345CS. Trhou all that the laptop is I think 15 yrs. old, the laptop's accumalator still lasts about 35-45 minutes. The L.C.D. display is pre T.F.T.; as a consequence, the responding time (hope this is the correct term in English) is big... Unfortenley, at my laptop you can't install a C.D.-R.O.M. in stad of the F.D.D. :(

You are having fun !! Over here, the Backpack CD drives were popular - plug into the printer port. They can be found cheap.

Also, exercise the battery to see if you can't restore accumulation a degree - repeat charge and discharge at full load a couple times.
 
I have a P.C.M.C.I.A. port with a strange exit on the other side. I have to put new elements on the accumalator. How hard is to find a C.D.-R.O.M. with a 25 pin serial output in U.S.A. I want one.

A lot of the stuff listed is drive only, so look for pics with the box or cables.

I seem to remember they also has serial ? But what I used was parallel. I think Iomega has some drives like this. I use the old Lap Link software for my Toshiba t3400. Have been meaning to get a Backpack, but it's not a big deal for me.
 
I've got the Backpack CD and also their DVD units. From time to time I still pull out the DVD and use it as it has both the parrellel and USB connections. Back in their day they were indispensable.

Wow! For a Romanian that stuff is still expensive. For an avarage Romanian 30-40 bucks is much.
I heard that C.D.-R.O.M.'s with serial output where faster then those with paralel output.
Now I'm typing from my old "Olivetti" keyboard. Man, it's so hard to type on it.

Well, I don't really need a external player. I use Lap Link, or some clone, and use the drives on a different machine. For DOS, you can just use simple Lantastic type networking. You might even set up a simple HOST with Ho.
 
Found a Texas Instruments TI-99/4a and the cassette program recorder for $5 yesterday at a garage sale. With the orignal boxes I couldn't pass up the deal.

Nice '80's stuff.
Some one tryed to install me yestarday a sound card at my 286. It dind't work. Probably I have to modifiy some jumpers... and I don't think some will be wiliing to do such a time consuming thing.
At a 486 laptop ("I.B.M." <<ThinkPad>> CS345) can I install a extrenal led accumulator. The orginial accumulator is almost dead and to put 10 1.2 V accumalators will cost me a small fortune.
 
I screw it up. I've set up the rezolution at 800 x 600 in stead of 640 x 480 (well, I put the computer at an monitor manufactured about 7 yrs ago - it' s professional monitor) and after the Windows is loaded I get only strips.
Tryed with HIMEM.SYS and config.sys and it was the same rezult.
 
What gives you stripes ? The laptop and DOS ? I will tell you, with old stuff, I start at 640. Then, you have to know what the monitor and video will match at. If you get good DOS, then enter windows safe mode and delete or change settings. Before 95, I DON'T REMEMBER HOW TO GET 800PIXEL ?
 
That is not unusual, but you still have to sync. Also, the video ram directly controls the max number of colors. So, as you go from 640, you loose color. 1024pixel may only be 16 color, or less. I don't have my old instruction manuals here, but the video cards I remember had a chart of what they could sync at and you had to match that up with the monitor specs.
 
Oh, jiggle connections and maybe slap the monitor. I've had to slap a few on the rear-end : )
