Sylvania had a lot of Taiwan/Hong Kong Made Audio Equipment from the 70's on, just a tad better then entry-level usually found at Rent-a-Centers, Catalog Stores and Department Stores. I haven't found anything worthy of keeping around, they look so dated now but they might come back if orange shag carpeting comes back.

Hand me downs are usually free. Try not to spend $$$ just to evaluate what was free. Granted, Sylvania is an older Company. However, if you are new to audio, you have to start someplace. If you can connect them and they work, GREAT. If you can remove the grills to see the condition of the speakers, even better. Usually with old speakers, the surrounds rot. So where the cone connects to the basket near the outer edge, their may be a corrugated area or a rubber looking element that helps the cone move in and out of the electro magnet in the center of the basket. Another thing to observe is to lightly touch all 5 fingers, as evenly spaced as possible, of one hand to an area near the center dust cover in the middle of the basket and press lightly. The cone should press in by tiny amounts and you should not detect any resistance at all. Don't press hard.

Sylvania made a bunch of perfectly decent speakers in the 60s and 70s. The ones I've encountered were acoustic suspension, and were heavy and well built. But those were their better products , not the ones that they sold to the console and medium fi market also. Yours look light and not very good. But listen to them before tossing them - they may surprised you. Light and simple can sometimes work out well.

That's a hoot, considering some of the junkers you've fooled with in the past, RW! T'was a time when you'd have jumped all over those things!
It's always worth considering that millions, maybe billions, of consumers think such speakers were fine. It's well known that if the midrange is decent, and high power levels are not expected, even small lightweight speakers can be satisfying - consider the popularity of those little bluetooth speakers - they are often rather pleasant to listen to.
