Anyone rebuilt the JBL SE400 before? Sourcing new capacitors.

I am having a hard time finding the capacitors for this amplifier with the correct value, Namely the 250uf 64v and the 160uf 64v caps. Anyone know a good quality capacitor I can replace these with? As I understand I can go up in voltage but the UF must remain the same. This is the first time I have ever had problems replacing caps and not find the correct value. Can someone tell me what I can replace these with? I have did a google search and do not find much information on these amplifiers.

What is the % value marked on the caps? Film or E caps? Saw the SM on HiFiEngine . I think if the value is in the range of the original capacitor you should be good. Don't think JBL still has replacement caps at this point. If the voltage is greater then 64v you should be good. Could get say 10 caps and then select the ones nearest the original value if necessary.

250uf 64v and the 160uf 64v caps. It seems they only make 150uF not 160uF.

You can combine caps (in parallel) to total up to the correct uF value if need be, just keep the voltage the same or higher than what was spec'd.

I was thinking of that too but the way the unit is built may be to big to fit the together and still have room to put the cover back on. I will give it a go and see.

C6 and C8 are just decoupling capacitors, the value isn't that critical. Since they are an axial type your choices will be limited anyway. I would just use the closest value axial capacitor, I use Nichicon myself, that fits in the space on the PCB. C6 could be 220uf or 330uf @ 63V and C8 could be 150uf or 220uf @ 63V.

That's what I needed to know! Thanks.

Do you happen to know the output transistors that go in here?

There are HEP247 and HEP248 on one side and 2N3791 and 2N3715 in the other side.

I think HEP was the old Motorola replacement line. I remember using those as a kid back in the 60s. Unfortunately the Service Manual only has JBL #s in it. Looks like the 2Nxxxx devices may be original, Mouser has them in stock. The new ones may have the same specs but are probably made by a different process than the 60s versions, epitaxial, hometaxial, etc.

Hello Everyone,

I to am re-capping an SE400. At least I believe it's a 400. It might be an SE400s. The nameplate is long gone. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had a schematic for these. The big old power capacitors will probably need to be replaced with two opposed terminal strips on which modern caps can be mounted. I simply found no good substitutes for the big power caps mainly because of their form factor.

A schematic would be incredibly helpful, along with any advice specific to these. Thank you.

P.s. if anyone needs info on what is inside this amp, it's open on the bench, now.

The big output guys in this unit are Motorola 12536 and 12537
The smaller guys mounted on the same surface between the big guys are Motorola 12538 and 12539

Also, I know this is an old thread, but for anyone trying to find space for capacitors, there is plenty on the back side of the circuit board (between the two boards).

You can find a service manual with a schematic for the SE400S here: https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/jbl/se400s.shtml

Axial caps are not nearly as plentiful as radial, but they exist, and today's versions tend to be much smaller. Please post pictures.
