Anyone still use a standalone CD burner?

Where do you get CD-R's from? I was a Neophyte when I got mine, unknowing the stupid 'consumer music' CD-R's with the ransom--err, extra RIAA fees on them. No, I'm not going to use a computer, don't have a laptop, I'm going to burn my LP's to CD in analog form up to the burner (Pioneer PDR-W739).

I use one, but I have a Tascam "Pro" model that gets around the RIAA fee music discs. Works with data discs. CD-Rs for music aren't that much more expensive nowadays though, if you shop sales and buy good brands. I usually check Amazon.com for good sale prices. They even have some TDK CD-RW music discs listed when I was considering a Teac "Consumer" CD recorder.

I still use mine, a Phillips. I use the Sony CDR's that are made for this purpose. I can usually find them at Walgreens. I don't seem to see them at too many other places. I usually wait until they have a sale and then stock up.

I still use a Sony player/recorder that I like very much. I think I bought my last batch of 'music' CDRs at either Walgreens or Best Buy. They're still around. I do a lot of home recording and master down to CDR on the Sony from a digital workstation. A bit outdated, but I'm so used to it by now that I don't see the point in switching until some breaks.

Thanks guys, I'll check Wally's. It didn't come w/ a manual--"What the @#*k does 'pro disc' mean?!" The Best Buy (I can see it if I walk out into the middle of our street) had 2, count 'em, 2 spindles of data CD-r's in the whole store, nothing else.

i sttill use a tascam cdrw-4u standalone and like a previous poster said with his tascam you can use any recordable cd's with it .fwiw the cdrw4u has a usb port that you can use to plug into a computer.strange though that tascam dont mention it in any adverts :scratch2: but its there.i bought mine brand new for over $700 when it came out but you can find them on ebay for around 200 if your patient.

We use Tascam standalones. Professional market units which use any media you like. I have a CD-RW 750, my son Erik has a CD-RW 900, Ingjerd, my wife has a CD-RW 900SL. All have been reliable in frequent daily use. For those with consumer standalone recorders, use Maxell Music CD-R, Sony Music CD-R, or use MAM-A Music CD-R, the last being the best Music CD-R disc you can buy. :tresbon:

I'm still using a Yamaha with a built-in hard drive. I get my music CD-Rs at Staples.

I use a Pioneer PDR-555RW for copying/archiving vinyl and tapes. I get my Sony Music CD-Rs from Costco.

I would love to find a good one cheap at an auction or garage sale...

Got my Pioneer Off CL for $50, no remote, they run $25. Evidently the built-in 3-disc changer can have transport problems, mine works, but the majority of the recording I'm going to do with be from an outside source. Thanks for the help from those who know where to go.

I have a JVC CD recorder that's easy to use and has excellent A/D and D/A converters. If memory serves, I bought my most recent spindle pack of 50 Maxell music CD-Rs at Best Buy.

I find music cd-r's fairly easily at most of the big box stores around here. Don't buy a large quantity until you try the brand to see if it is compatable with your recorder. I was stuck with a spindle of 50 Sony discs that my machine just didn't like for whatever reason.

Well, actually I would like to use mine more. Just recently, when trying to record,it will start and then the display switches to the word "update" and stays that way.No recording takes place. Any thoughts on why this is happening?:scratch2:

I think this format is going to die much faster than anything else. Special format CDRs required that perhaps won't be manufactured in a few years from now.
