Anyone tried a stylus 20 on a concorde nightclub?

nightclub mk2 that is...
waiting for new headshells for my OMs, couldn't resist the curiosity and put the 20 on it, even if i knew it's 'wrong'.

not impressed. while the whole presentation is quite enjoyable, it clearly lacks the stereo image/3d effect and the treble quality of the OM.
i'm not sure which of the two is more at fault, the weight of the cartridje itself, or the higher inductance (580mH for the concorde, 450mH for the OM- not 100% sure about the OM)

all that on technics sl1200mk5 stock, followed by vincent pho112 phono loaded at 100pf + cable

almost forgot, i had to put extra washers on the cartridge-tonearm lock, in order for it to allign with the overhang gauge.

anyone tried the same, share your experiences if you like

Actually, there were two different inductances for the Ortofon OM’s:

Super OM 10, 20, 30, 40 – 580mH
OM/OMB 3E, 5, 5E, D 25, 78 and OMP 10, 20, 30 – 450mH
OM 10, 20, 30, 40 – unknown (it wasn’t stated in the user guide for my OM 40, and the info isn’t available on their website for those models, but they may have been the same as the OMP's)

However, although heavier than the original hi-fi Concordes, the Concorde Nightclub weight is more in keeping with its lower compliance. That’s probably part of the reason why the 20 stylus, which is higher compliance, doesn’t work as well in it - it's probably a bit too heavy, so the resonance will be too low, whereas with the original Nightclub stylus, the resonance is probably in the right frequency range.

The original (late-70’s), much lighter (6.5g) hi-fi model Concordes, which were based on the Ortofon LM internals, had adjustable overhang by using an Allen key. But Ortofon left overhang adjustment off the DJ Concordes, probably to make them simpler to manufacture, and simpler for the Technics turntable-owning DJ to set up.

According to Ortofon, the DJ Concorde cartridges have an overhang distance (back of washer to stylus tip) of 51.5mm, while Technics turntables require 52mm. That's pretty close, so it should be almost exactly right on the alignment gauge.:scratch2:

I also tried it in the past and was not impressed, although I do like the sound of the Concordes with the Pro, Pro-S, DJ and Nightclub styli. As ETI 5000 pointed out in his excellent post, I believe the late Concordes are too heavy (massy) for the compliance of the HiFi styli. KAB sell them with STY-30 styli on them and some people like those but I havent heard one and probably won't be shelling out the $$$ to do so.

For Technics turntables, the present DJ Concordes do fine with a Stylus 20 as an upgrade. They are compatible and do fine. KABUSA sells this combination and it's beloved by many.

'almost' is the key word here--- thanx for the info:smoke:

it's not a problematic setup, it just plays better with an OM

I agree with the fact that the Stylus 20 is better on an OM. It does play better on an OM. I wish the DJ styli were higher compliance and tracked lighter to boot. They are more HipHop and Scratch than broadcast. I wish we had Ortofon OM Broadcast. More moderate compliance for broadcast, higher for OM HiFi and both in the same body. A 1.8-2.5 gram tracking conical stylus option which was OM friendly, and I'd use nothing else but an OM. I love the OM for HiFi. The OM DJ is too clumsy. I need both.

I'm using Concordes with D25M, 20, 30, and 40 styli on my Technics SL1200MK5 and Technics SP-15. Excellent results, no complaints whatsoever.
