Anyone using aluminum framing?

westend

Audiopile
I was thinking of geting some of this type of aluminum frame members for a couple of projects, including an equipment rack. Has anyone had any experience using this type of material? If so, where is a good supplier located?

I'm thinking that this type of frame device would lend itself pretty well to building a a sturdy rack. The extruded tubes have T tracks on all four sides so connections could be easily made. The strength should be there, as well. The use of four of these as uprights might compete in price to the cost of threaded rod and hardware to build a flexi-rack.

Give me some opinions, please.

Looks like a great candidate but expensive I imagine. Extruded aluminum is what it is. Check with your local metal distributor... they may have an idea as to where to get it.

I have worked on manufacturing equipment that was framed with this stuff. It is like an erector set on steroids. I like it, but it is very pricey!

The company's website has a link to locate local distributors.

I've used the Bosch framing (as well as 80/20 and others) extensively building machine frames and such. It is very strong and is quite expensive. It would make one hell of a nice audio rack if your pockets are deep enough. The cost of material would of course depend on the size of the extrusion you use and the design of the rack, but $800-1000 wouldn't unreasonable to expect.

Back when I was working at NASA, we'd buy the 80/20 for use in our lab to fabricate various stands and fixturing. -Really- nice stuff, sturdy, easy to work with, etc. But as mentioned above...expensive.

I've used that Bosch Rexroth aluminum extrusion before-- as other have said, it's great stuff, very strong for its weight!

I don't remember it being particularly expensive, though...

Never messed with it but I have seen it and thought about using it for a few projects.

If you goto mcmaster.com and do a search for 80/20 and got a few pages ahead in the online catalog you can see what all is offered and prices.

We are exclusive for Wisconsin for the FrameWorld product if I'm not mistaken and I believe we also are nationally set up with 80/20. Stuff is neat, made some power tool stands with it. Very strong / light weight but the price add's up for all the little pieces you need. You can order the lengths cut to length for you and then you just have to thread the hole in the end depending how / what you are doing / assembly it all.
