anyones else collect vintage slot cars?

just curious as im sure many people on here are about the right age to have raced slot cars in the golden age of the 60s. i didnt as im only 24 but vintage slot cars are one of my other hobbies/sickness:thmbsp:

i only buy scratchbuilt cars on ebay for cheap that are usually really messed up and fix them or use the parts to build my own period correct vintage cars.

and this is a vintage slot box i got at an estate sale for 25 bucks

with my collection in it.


also if you guys see these 1/24 scale cars at estate sales or garage sales i would buy them if they where cheap. some production cars can be worth hundreds of dollars.

There was a time when every dime I could muster went into slot cars and models.
Hint: pop bottle deposit refunds were $0.03. Cool cars you have there. 1/24th were the "ones".
 
No, I don't collect slot car stuff from the 60s. (Also: I'm only a bit older than you are.)

I did, however, have a slot car track in the early 90s, and my dad contributed some of the slot cars he had when younger. I still have nearly all the cars, and most of the track. My cars and track were from Tyco, his were from Aurora. I don't really know how the Aurora ones were. There's also a Life-Like branded set around here, but I have no idea where that came from.

I remember it being a lot more fun to run the cars I had at full throttle and watch them fly off into the room. :D It wasn't so much fun to find them.
 
I don't collect them, but I learned to solder building them. I'd love to see more pics of your collection.
 
I never collected them, but I raced the "HO" scale. We had a shop in town called "Cue and Car" where you could rent track time for either HO or 1/24th scale cars. My best friend Matt, and I spent a many of hours there. I won a third place ribbon one night, and when I packed up my gear, I realized my car had been stolen. It was easy to figure out who stole it, and I still know who you are! If I ever see this person again, I'll kick him in the NADS for posterity.
 
I did race slot cars in the late sixties early seventies , the best and fastest ones were made by Cox , I mostly had scalelectric ones . The hobby stores of the time had 6-8 lane tracks we would race on ....

my favorites are the big ones, 1/24 scale made for big wooden 8 lane commercial tracks. i run all my vintage cars. heres some more.

heres another dynamic chassis car that i put a new body on.


with most the old cars i get i just straighten bent stuff sand down crusty old tires and tune them up. i tend to leave all the patina thats been acquired over 40 plus years.

nice collection young man, yes indeed they bring back memories of my youth, the eight lane tracks, "King' something or other…….. I had a few 'pan' cars (1/24) in my day.

Where do you race them ? I had assumed RC cars made them all but extinct

slot cars never really went extinct just underground. there has always been tracks around but alot of people moved to RC cars. theirs a couple tracks left in southern California. the biggest is Buena Park Raceway.

Can't say I ever raced them seriously, but spent many hours with brothers and friends doing something that vaguely resembled racing.

About 10 years ago I got into a phase of buying up some track and a bunch of old cars. It was pretty funny, I was buying up some NOS cars one time and the guy was up in arms because I planned on actually using them. Now they've been sitting unused for quite some time, but with a new 6 year old step son about to join us, I'm planning on dusting them all off and having some fun!

Very cool, Mark! I used to race HO scale. It was Aurora ThunderJets then A/FX. That was back before you could whiz along at thousands of MPH and hardly ever fall off due to the magnets holding the car on... no fun!! Sadly I left my stuff with my neighborhood friend when I moved from Calif. to AZ, then he gave it all to another friend when he moved out of state. Wish I still had it. :tears:
 
Back when I was a kid, "Santa" brought me and my brother a huge 1/24 scale race set one Christmas. Track must've been a foot wide or more in some places. I'll never forget it. Coolest toy I ever had.
 
MadMark. I have a few pieces from the early 70's I would love to pass on. How about an address. It's not much but it's just here collecting dust. We do have a Scale Electric track with some fly cars we set up once in a while.

I had a few slot cars, some tether cars from the 1960's as well as old manuals, books and some original boxes. I had forgotten about them until I was watching Storage Wars or some other tv show a year or so back and saw a tether car on there. I never thought some of those would be worth $$$. Anyway, I went and dug them out of the garage and sold all that stuff on epay last spring.
 
Thanks for the pics guys. They really take me back to the 60s. I practically lived at the slot track in the summers.

I remember getting my first 1/24th set Christmas of 64 but didn't get to play with it until Boxing Day when my dad and uncles had finally had their fill of it.

There's a track I used to race on about 6 years ago when I lived in Houston.
There's a track in Austin now. I need to go check it out sometime.

Some really neat stuff here. The OP has a nice collection, just needs a place to run 'em.
My dad would take me to a big track every now and then, I had a Monogram track at our house for 1/24 and 1/32 cars.
Great memories. Still have all that stuff boxed up, most in original boxes, but I'm thinking most of the cars are hurt.
