Well folks...

This morning I pulled the trigger on a new set of Cherry Verus Grand Towers from Aperion Audio.

I'm banking on their free in home 30 day trial to guard against a wrong decision on my part, and I will send them back if not satisfied.

Application is 2 channel audio in a 20 X 16 room, to potentially replace a set of Paradigm Studio 80 v1 towers. Current system is a B&K Reference 20 preamp, a Kinergetics Chiro C-500 bi-amping the Studio's, listening primarily to HD quality Pandora via ethernet thru my BluRay player, or CD's on an Onkyo DXC-3800.

I'm quite satisfied with the current setup, but always curious too. Aperion says their tweeters are much more laid back than the Paradigms, so that will be something to consider as I do like a bright speaker typically for smooth jazz, some country, light rock, etc.

If anyone else has done the in home trial of Asperion products, I'd love to hear of your experience. I'll post my impressions when these arrive also.

You don't hear much about Aperion around here. I have the Intimus 6B's that I got used on CL for a good price along with the matching sub. They are beautiful, sound great and are built VERY well. Good luck!

Sound wise, I think they are close to the B&W 602s3's (which were very nice speakers) that I had but these look much nicer.
 
I bought some of their very first production units, 11 years ago. A couple years after that, the cabs started to split apart. I contacted them and they said they were using a totally different production process now, and would send me new speakers right away. They did, I sent my old ones back to them, and I've gotta say they were built like bank vaults. They used moderately inexpensive Vifa drivers that were well engineered though, and they were the first speakers I've ever owned that I could actually say "imaged" properly. Quite inefficient and very mellow sounding though. They're still cooking away though, over at my dad's house.

The comment above about them being inefficient surprises me. Either they've changed something, or their ratings aren't true.

A good friend of mine has an all Aperion HT set-up, driven with an Emotiva XPA-5. It's the series one step down from the Versus, Intimus, I think?

Very clear and defined, but not as forward as some of the speakers I'm used to. Compared to my ADS and Snell speakers, the sound is as if you are sitting 10 rows back in a concert hall, rather than front row. His system was very enjoyable and effortless to listen to, but not missing anything. Aperion's cabinets sure are rock solid.

I've been very curious to hear how the Versus series sound, and will look forward to your comments about them.

I like a forward, bright, and dynamic speaker. But I also like a good overall balance of frequency response and imaging. So everything I hear says these would not be my first choice.

I recently refurbished and flipped a pair of Martin Logan Arius I's. The clarity and imaging was off the charts, but only if seated right in the sweet spot. Move six inches any direction and it was lost, and I found myself missing concussive dynamics. (Yes....I ran a sub with them)

I'm anxious to give these a good 30 day break in and test....

I would have been more accurate to say that his system, in his room, was not as forward as I was used to, not just the speakers. The Versus are supposed to be a definite step up from the Intimus, so please do share your impressions.

Hello and thanks for the order!

Yes our Verus speakers are more sensitive than our Intimus speakers, which is our original speaker line.

For instance the Intimus 5T, which is the current top of the Intimus line, has a sensitivity of 89 dB. The 4T comes in at 88dB since we had to sacrifice a bit more sensitivity to get the bass response we wanted from the speaker.

Some of older speakers that we don't produce any longer were quite low sensitivity, with the Intimus 6B being the most extreme example at 82 dB.

I'd agree totally with that assessment, which, of course, you ought to know I suppose! Just for the record though, my speakers pre-date the Intimus line, which were the third line of speakers produced by Aperion. And insensitive they are, indeed. I'd say 82 db just about nails it. I attribute the DiAural crossover to that, but I loved them for years. :)
 
Oh the anticipation....

Aperion's are scheduled to arrive tomorrow! :D

I have such great hopes for this speaker. Fortunately, I also have a good audiophile friend who will help me remain objective in my listening and overall evaluation. The guy plays piano and has such an incredible ear for picking out not only specific tonal qualities in a system, but the overall balance of frequency response and dynamics.

I currently have several towers to provide comparisons to, including Axiom M60's, Klipsch RF3 II, Paradigm 9se Mk II, Studio 60 v2, and Studio 80's v1, Infinity Crescendo CS 3009, Boston Acoustic A150, and Polk Audio SDA 2b.

Between the two of us, after sufficient break in time we should be able to provide a pretty neutral report.

Ah right you are it looks like the 522 was the first speaker labeled "Intimus", I think of the 502s and 512s as Intimus speakers though because the design didn't change all that much until we launched the 532s.

In any event I hope you enjoy them ProPer!
 
I just reluctantly sold my Fortes to raise money for a much needed roof project before winter gets here. So...I've hooked my 6B's back up. The first thing I noticed is how friggin solid and heavy these are for a bookshelf speaker of their size. Then I gave them a quick wipe with some pledge. Aperion REALLY does make a beautiful speaker. I am listening to Eva Cassidy at the moment these things have surprising bass and dynamics for a speaker of their size. Eva's incredible voice sounds wonderful. I was originally going to sell these but I am glad that I kept them now.

edit...My ONLY negative comment would be about sensitivity. This model does need a little more power than other speakers that I have had but all things considered, I really like the 6B and I hope that your new speakers are all that you hope they will be.

Kudos to Aperion Audio :thmbsp:. I've not dealt with their customer service yet but I've heard very good things about it as well.

Now, back to Eva :music:
