There's a local auction I stumbled upon and one of the items made me kind of do a double take. The logo says "Heath", but the design and layout say "harman/kardon hk825".

I put a bid on it, if only to get it as a curiosity. It would appear that Shin Shirasuna, h/k's Japanese OEM at that point, not only released h/k and their own Silver lines, but built it up for others as well, including Heath.

Expect a report and compare/contrast if I win it.

Going by styling cues, it must have been from the late years of Heath/Heathkit. I think by that point Zenith had taken over,
so it's quite possible that some components were sourced from HK.

Ha! Just got that... H.K. Harmon Kardon... Heath Kit... :)
 
Lol. I didn't catch that one. Does make me wonder if there is a Heath equivalent to the matching hk870 though :scratch2:.
 
Wouldn't you just love to get to the bottom of this one!

I'm wondering whether Shin was 'touting' for the chance to make their components under the umbrella of a foreign(recognised)brand name?

It vaguely looks familiar from a Heath Catalog I had in the late 80's(87~89) :scratch2:. It kinda intrigued me at the time as it was probably one of the nicer looking pieces in Heath's catalog. Much of what was in the catalog seemed like junk except for some Ham radio stuff.

Early '80s for that piece.
 
HK825, first preamp I ever owned. Purchased new on closeout from saturday audio exchange. I was 14 I think.

That looks identical. I wish I still had that preamp.
 
Well, I didn't win it. But, it's interesting about those who heard about it through HAM circles- the auction was for the estate of a HAM operator- all sorts of gear related to the hobby.
