Have a iPod 160 gb piece of. To make a long story short my computer crashed so bought a new one. Now iPod will not sync with new computer. So I erased iPod and it stil won't sync. Why does apple do this I had lots of music on iPod and had 100 gb left. Now I have no music on it and left with a piece of crap. I should of stayed with all analog I was much happier. Vinyl and tapes. Spent lots of hours messing around for nothing but aggravation. So for someone who wants to buy a apple iPod run the other way and avoid.

Sorry formuladale. I think the last iPod with a hard drive was 2008. So you may have a software incompatibility with the old iPod OIS and your new computer operating system. Stay positive and good luck

Roger

What OS are you running? My iPod 160 (and the other 2 in the family) work fine on Windows 10 for me.

Sorry you had this experience. Hard way to learn that backing up your computer is a critical link in the digital chain.

Apple makes good products, and and hopefully this thread doesn't turn into an "Apple Sucks!" thread, but you did say YOU erased the iPod so how is that Apples fault?

As for running the other way and avoiding, the older 160GB iPods are in big demand these days (see completed sales on the auction site) which leads me to believe that they still work, sync etc;

TONS of info on the Apple support forums on how to sync to iTunes regardless of computer.

Apple said I had to erase iPod if I want to sync to another computer. So I did. I just got off the phone with apple support. The person I talked to this time seems to know what he is talking about. Previous calls to apple were not helpful. I will cross my fingers and hope for the best. Why does it have to be so difficult it was easy when I connected the iPod to the computer the first time. They are going to call me back. Thanks for all the help and encouragement. Dale

Hey Dale,

My guess is that the version of iTunes on your new computer is not recognizing the old iPod thus not being able to "hand shake" or connect. That being said you should be able to get it figured out with the help of Apple support. The updates to iTunes and the design layout can be annoying and frustrating.

This is just a suggestion and if you've already done this then ignore but I found a lot of people having similar issues and it seems the USB could be an issue too.

I had an issue awhile back with my iPad not syncing on one of my Macs but it would on another. It took me awhile but I was able to figure it out after some trial & error.

Don't let this sway you, the reason a lot of people are paying top dollar for these older models is for the HD space plus they still work.

Dale,

Seeing that i like to trouble shoot when it comes to Apple products let me know if when your in iTunes you see this, the iPod logo (note the red circle)

When you click on that do you see this, when you scroll to "Music" in the left hand column under Settings? Let me know

Yes the iPod icon is there. I spoke with apple support in the past about the iPod and didn't get anywhere. But this last phone call to them were very helpful. My iPod is letting me put music back on it. I learned a lesson always back up the music on another hard drive in case computer crashes. I have other apple devices iPad and iPhone 6s. And really like. So disregard my earlier post about running the other way. Dale

Dale,

I'm glad to hear you got your music back, about 6 months ago the HD on an old MacBook of mine crapped out, luckily I had 3 different EHD's that I use to back up my various Apple products. I too have a LOT of music stored and I'd hate to lose it.

Yes lesson learned back up iPod on EHD. I'm very impressed on the sound quality of this device. I listen to all formats of music and they all have good qualities. If it was recorded right the sound comes through no matter what format your listening to. From my experience.

I have to agree with the sound quality of the older IPod. The clarity IMHO out performs the music on my iPhone and newer divices by a mile
