Approach to finding surrounds for uncommon speakers?

How do you approach finding surrounds for uncommon speakers? Like if I want a kit for a pair of Advent OLA, that is easy enough - buy a kit in eBay. What if you have a pair of uncommon speakers - how do you go about figuring what you need? Just buy generic surrounds of the right size and hope for the best?

Basically, yes.

Couple things to remember ... it's not only the cone diameter you have to consider. Inner and outer diameter of the surround and just as important, the profile of the cupped cross section. That's got to be right so the cone gets the right amount of travel ...

PS ... I'm sure most folk who sell surrounds also keep notes on what works with what, even if they don't list them for a specific speaker. Give them a yell and see what they got for recommendations. Bonus points if you've done your measurements first.

Best I can offer,,, call/write Rick Cobb (looneytune 2001),, and tell him what you are working on,,, he can usually guide you in the right direction...

DIMENSIONS

You need to know several different dimensions, then deal with a seller who knows the dimensions of the various products he is selling.

Yes - before I ditched using Aliexpress (due to many many frustrations with shipping & sellers) I would go on there.

Chinese sellers are usually quite useless for giving critical info like size & specs for their stuff but it was different for surrounds - they have all the measurements on diagrams and I used this method to get new surrounds for some JBL control 1 woofers - it was easy and all the info was surprisingly accurate.

Steve Deckert (Decware) also used to do a lot in the re-surrounding biz. Dunno if he does (they do) any more, though.
If Rick (who is absolutely terrific to deal with, by the way), by some happenstance, can't help, might be worth trying Deckert.
There was someone who posted on AK a little while back that he was a supplier of surrounds, or he had very tight connections with the supplier, or something along those lines. Might be worth searching for.

How about that! I ordered 6-1/2" generic surrounds with a flat mount. I was going to use a cd and bowl to make the "spacer", but a decent compass was more accurate. Prepping is a mess, just like any other surround replacement. I used glue made for adhesion to Styrofoam, (for the spacer to the cone), and Alieen's for the rest of the project. Sand off the "fuzzys" after cutting the spacer with medium to fine sandpaper, (or whatever is handy), even an emery board will be ok. Use a sharp Exacto knive or a sharp razor blade in cutting out the spacer. One thing I did that moebuster did not, was I covered the entire Styrofoam cone, and spacer to the rolled edge of the surround, (the cd is a perfect fit). Now for caution, if you decide to go forward. Be really careful removing the deteriorated foam from the Styrofoam cone. It should peel back with not too much effort, but you do not want to damage the cone. Really sharp razor blades are really sharp! I bleed a lot. Test any chemicals used to clean off the cone to avoid melting it. I used rubbing alcohol. When finished, the bass those little woofers puts out is incredible. Feel free to PM me if and when you decide to refoam if you need tips. I'm in the Central Time Zone. Including surrounds, I had about $25.00 into the project.
@jcamero - What a coincidence - Phase Techs were specifically what I had in mind when posting this.
