AR-2ax Tweeter replacements

Yup. Measured, actually, and addressed in the thread with the familiar JBL foam rings used on 4311/L100 and others.... :thmbsp:

PM member MacAltec, who has access to a machine shop.

Also, there's sheet-metal fabricators throwing away discs of similar size from punching holes as scrap. Any shop with a metal lathe can cut the center hole to size.

Is there an industrial metal recycler in you area? Check the yellow pages.

Buy a couple thousand and go into the custom AR tweeter retrofit flange business....

Both of the tweeters in my pair of AR-2ax are beginning to rattle and crackle. I was wondering what modern replacement would best fit the opening in the speaker and still remain faithful to the original sound? My pair are the early version, with the massive ten pound hard dome alinco tweeters.

Installing "modern" drivers is just going to result in "modern" speakers.

I would stay as original as possible. If I couldn't find exact AR-2ax tweeters I'd look for similar tweeters for other speakers in the classic AR line. AB Tech Services lists AR-3a replacement tweeters, which should be the same as a later 2ax. If the resulting sound isn't exactly identical to the originals, at least they'll still be in the same ballpark, and you can always go on prowling eBay for the real thing.

AB Tech Services sells the replacement strictly in a 4 ohm AR-3a version. It might be possible to use a resistor to make it work, though. Surely someone's done it?

Still, that would only replicate the later AR-2ax tweeter, and at a cost that would probably exceed buying originals.
