AR 38A's - refoam

Ok. I picked a pair up at SA for 10 bucks but need refoamed. Kit is 37 dollars. I've never refoamed a pair of speakers before so just doing it for the experience is something I'm weighing into the process too. But I would like to know if anyone feels these speakers are worth the refoam. The AR A3's I have I can say would definetly be worth it (course they dont need it) but haven't ever heard these before. Thought about hooking them up to hear with volume low-would it hurt them as the surrounds are shot.:scratch2:

Guess I'm gonna order the surrounds. One more project and a good learning experience. lol. They are certaintly heavy for there size. Hope it goes well and they sound great.

38's are IIRC a 10" woofer, and the 1.5" cone/dome hybrid tweet used in the 6,7,8,17,18,93,94, etc? I'd do it. should be able toi find the refoam for less than $37...you want the 10" boston acoustic "filled fillet" type surround, and some aileen's tacky glue. these have a wide enough voice coil gap to not need to shim the voice coil, just use a 30hz test tone to center.

Order your surrounds from member Rick Cobb. He has the right surrounds. Just did a pair. Those drivers have a screen around the basket to keep the insulation out. A little trick I use is to cut pieces of foam rubber into square cubes of different sizes. The ones I use for the AR3a woofers are about 1 1/2 inches square. As I lift the cone I push one down each side of the frame between the frame and the cone. This raises the cone far enough and keeps it up to glue the surround to the cone. Of course I take them out when gluing the surround to the masonite. I have different sizes for different drivers and keep them in a zip lock bag.

Rick's surrounds come with glue, instructions and a 30hz cd to center the voice coils.
