AR-4x Level control repair

Good job Andyman.

There is a guy that sells the pots on ebay that I used to replace mine. About the same size and had no problem with fit.

I did keep the old ones but the one I did try to clean up was very,very corroded and extremely pitted when I got it pretty clean. Thought new would be better.

Once I had mine running, managed to explode one of the woofers - probably didn't help that the cone seemed extremely brittle. So mine are back on the shelf for a while. Probably concentrate on a pair of Advent/1 for a while if I can pick up one more tweeter.

Another good way to make sure it's all over is to try chipping off corrosion with a small screwdriver and have the end of the "wiper" disintegrate :-(

Actually, while I'm at it, this speaker was serial number FX129xx and my other one is # 359xxx. Anyone know how far off those are from each other, time wise? I assume these were not originally purchased as a pair, but thats how they were when I found them at Ballard Goodwill for $20. (props to the jealous kid who saw what I had found and told me to check out AK for this pot discussion)

The AR pots are a bit of a special case because they have a ceramic case. Most of the other pots I cleaned in the metal cases could be sprayed directly, exercised and cleaned up. The Ar's were tough to get at. I replaced mine with Rat Shack units and they worked fine, but Thanks for that info Andy. If I were get another pair of AR's I'll try your method.

The serial numbers indicate they are from the late 60's and early/mid 70's respectively. It is likely the woofer coils are slightly different (.88mh for the earlier cabinet, and 1.20mh for the later ). Ordinary 8 ohm l-pads can be used to replace the pots, with a 25 ohm resistor in parallel across the tweeter to emulate the original effect of pots.
