AR-4X Speakers

I going to check out some AR-4X's tomorrow. They appear to be in near perfect condition. No dings- dents or even scratches. Perfect grill cloth and both logo's present. All origional paperwork on the back in great shape. I've heard and read many good things about these and I'm wondering what would be a fair price to offer for them? How do they compare to Large Advents?
Any opinions greatly appreciated

Hi,

I own my original AR4x's, and I also did own the Deluxe Advents. The Advents have deeper bass response, but for some reason, I was not in love with them. If I remember correctly I think the highs were not to my liking, and I replaced them with Dynaco A-25's which I also still own.

The AR's cost 57 dollars each when new and you can use that as a basis. Can you listen to them? The main weakness of older AR equipment has been the tweeter controls and I finally had to replace mine. I have never had any problems with woofer deterioration on the AR 4x's or the A-25's.

I am now using the AR4x's in my study with a Sony STR6055 receiver(35 watts/channel) and the system sound just fine.

Thanks for the info Johnda. I'd be using these on both Sanaui receivers. The QRX is 35 WPC & the G-6000 is 65 WPC.
$114 for the pair in......what year did these come out? Late 60's?
I will be able to listen to them before making a decision. Are the tweeter controls serviceable? Maybe some DeOxit might help if the control is accessable.

Hi,
The original tweeter control had a problem with the wiper and I was unable to fix the problem because of the way the unit was sealed. The sound just kept getting worse with more sections of no audio as the tweeter control was moved until the tweeters became dead. I replaced them with L Pads from Radio Shack. To do this you need to remove the woofer, push aside the padding and get at the control, then solder in the new control, place the padding back in place and replace the woofer. I did this about 15 years ago and the controls are still fine. I don't know if the shack carries that control any longer as they have really gone away from the hobbiest area.

All you need to do is while listening to the speaker rotate the tweeter control. If the sound drops out, you will have problems. By the way, take a gander at the thread regarding the $50 speaker. I recommend that you read through the thread, it's a very interesting one.

How do they compare to Large Advents? The Advents are a better loudspeaker. You could even consider the Large Advent to be an "AR4X MKII" of sorts because the designs are very similar on different scales. The AR4x tweeter is junk by comparison to the Advent, but its woofer decent. The Advent is a much larger loudspeaker with a more sufficient tweeter, you'll simply get more realism out of it as a consequence. Both enclosures have the crap stuffed out of them with material (fibreglass and open cell foam). Both will be relatively polite loudspeakers, smooth, but relatively undynamic. If space permits: the Advent hands down.
