AR-4x

Looking at some AR-4x speakers. Are they a good sounding system for reasonable money? I just can't bring myself to spend what people want for AR-2s.

It seems that everyone likes the 4X ARs, I have two pair. During some speaker trials I tried the 4Xs with a Marantz 2010, and I didn't like it, it just didn't have enough pep.

However, what I and others have posted in the past is they need a little oomph behind them to open up. A 10 watt per channel doesn't cut it, and even 20 seems to strain. So if you have 30+ rms I think you'll do ok!

I enjoy the set I have, but I recommend you be prepared for some maintenance, as the L-pads tend to be problematic and a recap should be considered considering their age. Both are rather straightforward to correct.

Very nice sounding speakers. A lot more sound than one would expect from a speaker this size.

I am running mine on a 20 watt tube amp no problem.

For such a small speaker the sound is amazing.

I use mine for FM listening as they image very nicely, have some bass when called for, and tend to calm down some of the over-modulations from the broadcasting, in particular, over enthusiastic announcers.

I'm not a big fan of replacing cross-over caps at the drop of a hat, but in the ARs case, mine drifted to 36uf rather then the 20uf, so replacement was necessary.

Here we go...I threw my hat in the ring for these AR-4X. Not in the best shape but I'm a woodworker, so I can always spruce up the outsides. What are good caps for these without getting too crazy ? I've been using the Daytons as coupling caps and I like them. Should they be film/foil or metalized poly? Any help is always greatly appreciated. :scratch2: + =

I think you will like the AR's a friend of mine has a set for sale at reasonable money. I borrowed them and listened to them for a couple of weeks and was quite impressed with the little speakers that could.

Dayton audio grade caps will be fine.
