Picked up a pair of AR 9ls this morning for 200$. They sound good but the cabinets are real rough. My first question is what is the easiest way to get the bottom firing woofer out. They definitely need new surrounds all around. I don't kwow what to do with the ugly cabs. The wife is already giving the evil eye.

But.....I want to say that these are some great speakers when running up to spec....a bit of an east coast, cult classic....great bass out of these things and an all round top notch performer....stick it out it'll be worth it...I predict even your wife will think so!!!

You will have to pull the front firing 12" woof out first to access the mountings for the downward firing 10". Man, if there is Any chance you can save/refinish those cabs, refoam and get them in service!!! With plenty of amp power :)

I just picked up a pair of AR-9 LSIs last week. Just finishing refoaming in addition to the NS-500, Kappa Center, Infinitesimal IV, and the 8" drivers on my AR-9s that all need/needed refoaming.

Anyways to get the 10" downfiring out, do what Dave said, pull the 12" woofer out. You'll see a bunch of foam in your way. I found it easiest to reach to the bottom and fold the foam up and stuff it upwards. The 10" woofer should be accessible now. I used a 11/32" socket to loosen the 4 nuts. The screws are long so either grab a long 11/32" socket or if you only have a regular short 11/32", you can do it by hand without the socket wrench. The nuts were fairly loose for me. Be careful when you're done refoaming and replacing the woofer. You don't want to put the foam surround through one of the screws.

woofers out

Thanks guys. I'm on it this morning. The guy I bought them from had these as garage speakers. Must be nice.

AR 9ls

Got the bottom woofers out. It makes sense that these had nuts on the back side instead of just screws. Thanks again. Ordering surrounds today. I will see about veneer on the cabs. I'm fairly inept.

Since you're in there, you might want to consider doing the mod to make it from an LS to an LSI. I've read that it's just adding 2 resistors to the crossover network. It's supposed to tame down the midranges. It sounds like the majority prefer the LSI sound, but there are some who like the LS. Just something to consider.

Do you need to replace the foam in around the downfiring chamber? If you do, I just had a foam shop somewhat near me cut them for me. Everything came out perfect and it was less than $20. Let me know if you want the measurements or if you want me to order you a set.

Before I got mine...

My wife really didn't like the Who. And then the A9LSI came to the house and then it was "I really like the Who". You can pretty them up with veneer . And if that doesn't work try pushing her out with some Pearl Jam, Incubus, or Aerosmith. Congrats and enjoy! (They do like power).
