AR Remote Control

Hello. I have an Audio Research remote control unit I bought in the early '80's. It works by being patched into the main/preout jacks or through a tape monitor loop; allows you to control volume, balance, a couple of other functions. Basically you turn up the amp/receiver volume and control it through the remote.

My question - is there any risk of overloading/overheating my amp by doing this? I originally had it plugged into a Mitsubishi receiver; however, now considering running it through a Pioneer SA-7700 integrated amp via tape monitor loop.

Feedback is appreciated, particularly from anyone who might actually be using one of these units.

This is a common mixup that I need to correct: AR = Acoustic Research, not Audio Research. Audio Research Corp never made such a unit, but AR did.

That said: There should be no problems with using it with any of your vintage receivers.
 
Sorry about that - I'm even looking at the owners' manual and still used wrong reference!

I remember those from the 80's! Do you know what is the model number of the AR remote unit was?
 
i have only seen this unit used between preamp and power amp as long as you dont leave the amp or reciver turned up all the time when not in use it should be fine.

my friend used his between a mcintosh C32 and a mc 7270

It is called the AR SRC Stereo Remote Control. I bought it in Feb 1984 at HiFi Buys in Atlanta - $149.99. The manufacturer was actually Teledyne Acoustic Research. Still running great - have it connected through the adaptor loop in an SX-1250. Using this method you do have to be careful to turn down the volume when not in use - if you ever hit that switch by accident you can definitely get a wake up call :sigh:
 
The SRC defaults on turn-on to a muting-engaged state (20dB down, according to the manual),and if power is lost will "forget" its last volume setting and default to all the way down. As long as you never accidentally turn off whatever EPL you have it connected through, you should be ok. The amp I'm using mine with has a slight turn-on pop, though, so I make a habit of keeping the speaker switch off until about 10 seconds after I switch everything on.
 
My next door neighbor used one of those AR remote controls in his main music system. The AR remote and other units like it add the convenience of remote control to older audio equipment without remote capability. My neighbor used his between his Marantz 7 preamplifier and whatever amplifier he was using on any given day. It worked well in his system.
 
In college I used it as a pre-amp, I had it and a sherwood amp, of course there is no phono input, I used cassette and cd. It worked pretty well. There should be no problem since the volume only controls small voltage amounts.

i still have one i use in my system it is hooked up between a dynaco stereo 35 and a pas 3 preamp in my second floor family room system . speakers are 1980's vintage spender sa-2 's . it is still hanging in there . they pop up on ebay sometimes . i often thought about buying one as a spare . creek makes a nice remote but it costs more and has less features than the ar does .:music:
 
In the 80’s, I used mine as a pre-amp with my NAD 2155 amp and Ohm Walsh 2s. Simple but sweet, CD and Tape. I still use it in the garage with a Clarion car amp, a tuner, and some beat up speakers. The tape monitor switch on the top of the AR SRC got a little scratchy so I took it apart and worked the switch over with contact spray.
I would love to mod this thing and add a blue tooth board.
 
I've got a question for you guys: I have an SRC that I picked up for a good price (I stupidly sold my first one, years ago) running off one of the tape loops of my Citation 17 preamp. It's fantastic, of course, but I have found that, for some reason, the RCA jacks are a bit too tiny for the Monster interconnects that I use (i.e., they fit, but they're on the loose side. As long as nothing moves around, it's fine.)

Has anyone ever seen this? And - as an aside - is it possible to (easily!) replace/upgrade the RCA jacks on the SRC?

I think it would be a lot easier to replace the interconnect than the RCA jacks. YMMV
