I was curious if anyone has ever attempted a repair on the AR XA single version motor? I bought a table that had a totally trashed motor. The motor was so bad, you could hear it across the room scraping. It was causing the whole platter and tonearm to bounce visibly up and down about a mm. I have noticed that there is a replacement available from Hurst but being that its a significant outlay for one, I thought it couldn't hurt to try and see what was ailing the original motor.
I unbolted it from the top plate and noticed that the flange of the motor had broken loose one of its little riveted holes. I took a screwdriver and broke the flange loose the rest of the way. To my surprise the motor only has one bearing that is located on the motor flange itself. Get this, the motor was completely smooth! What had happened was the flange was at an angle and was causing the magnet element to contact the sides of the motor making it scrape scrape scrape. I prepped the metal flange and then epoxied it back in place (since the stamped-on flange rivets can't be reused) and held the flange assembly in place while running it. I moved it side to side until the motor went totally quiet. Don't electrocute yourself! Once the epoxy set up, it was as good as new...i think. It's as quiet as I can possibly imagine that motor being.
Just an fyi, if anyone happens to have what seems like a fubared motor out there and feels adventurous.
