I've had my XA for a very long time, and it runs great. I recently made a large batch of custom Mogami interconnects for my stuff at home. As it turns out, I have some cable left. My AR-XA still has the original RCA cables, so I thought that I'd make a custom set to replace it. I don't want to add RCA jacks to the rear of the plinth, I'd just like to solder in a new cable with my leftover Mogami 2549. I have a few questions as to how to go about this...

I attached the AR-XA wiring schematic. According to it, I assume that I attach Mogami 2549 cable left shield to one post, left + and - to the next post, repeat for the right cable. The 5th post is a new ground wire to my receiver/amp ground - with both AR-XA chassis grounds soldered to the 5th post as well.

Does this sound right?

Also, on the receiver/amp side, do I keep the shields for L and R connected to the RCA plug terminals? Or do I connect just one shield and leave the other disconnected? If I leave once side disconnected, doesn't that negate the need to add a new ground wire?

I hope this makes sense. Somehow I know that this is inherently simple to do - however, I think I've confused myself.

You are correct on your wire scheme, the RCA jacks need the left and right grounds attach as normal. You can bridge the make table/subchassis ground into one of the channel grounds and eliminate the additional ground wire.
 
No real problem at hand. The original RCA cable works fine but my entire system has Mogami interconnects. My XA is the only part that doesn’t. Maybe an improvement? I’ll find out and report back. As is, my restored XA has given me 20 years of terrific sound. Perhaps splicing in 2549 cabling will add to the silence and depth?
 
The only thing we can be sure of is that it will change the capacitance seen by your pre.

Might want to test em out before you cut anything.
 
I chose W2549 to make interconnects partially due to the super low capacitance rating. The superb shielding was also something I considered. The cables I made really sound fantastic and are also deeply silent. Can't wait to see if the last part of my system not using 2549, my beloved AR-XA, will perform better once installed. I wasn't going to mess with it but I have about 7 feet of 2549 left so I figured I'd try it out. Why the hell not! :)
 
I recently made a ton of interconnects for my entire system with Mogami 2549. I’m astonished with how much of an audible difference the cabling makes. I agree with you that it’s good stuff. It’s surprisingly easy to make your own custom interconnects. I opted to shield one side as per most recommendations. I have zero buzz with all my looped processors etc.
 
Mogami 2549 is super nice cable for interconnects! I also recently made new interconnects with it, using the Rean 273 RCA ends.
I was amazed that not only did I notice a difference between it and the generic cables I had been using, these new 2549 cables were a huge improvement in clarity and detail! Now I want to make up more cables with XLR ends.. :)
