AR XA Refinish Advice Request

Folks I have an AR XA that works and I would like to Moriniz to my limited abilities (Marc was generous with his advice). My first challenge is cleaning up the dirty and moldy metal surface. Any suggestions on the best way to approach this?

1550BC03-0EF3-4288-875E-A3B9B94F3707.jpeg Before you go to the trouble of stripping and painting. I would clean it with soppy water and a sponge. Mine looked pretty close to this. After a good cleaning and some Howard’s ‘feed and wax’ looked factory. I had to wet sand the plater to get rid of the original plater mat.

Wow that is really impressive! I am going to take your advice, thanks for the information.
 
Years ago I picked one up in the same condition as yours. I used that orange, safe stripper on the top which took the gunk right off. Then I sprayed it with Rustoleum professional.

Chucked the platter spindle in the electric (that's how long ago) drill and held Never Dull against it until it shined.

Sanded the base and applied Watco Natural.
 
I refurbished one that looked exactly like yours. I removed the top plate and used paint stripper to remove the rotten surface crud. Then I scruffed the surface with sandpaper and shot it with a hammer tone spray paint. I’m very pleased with the results I like the look of hammer tone finishes. It’s period correct and hides many imperfections.

This is an impressive job. I saw someone post a white painted top that looked terrific also...
